The final day of League 2 football in 2016 takes place on New Year’s Eve on Saturday. We had three matches of the current round of fixtures on Friday night which leaves us with just nine to have a go at on Saturday.
The fixtures are as follows: (3pm unless stated)
Mansfield Town v Doncaster Rovers 12:15
Leyton Orient v Cambridge United 13:00
Crewe Alexandra v Accrington Stanley
Grimsby Town v Blackpool
Luton Town v Barnet
Newport County v Exeter City
Notts County v Carlisle United
Plymouth Argyle v Crawley Town
Stevenage v Colchester United
Big Matches
The leaders Plymouth will be looking for the win which ensures they head into 2017 on top of the pile when they host Crawley at Home Park. Carlisle in second place head to Notts County while third placed Doncaster play Mansfield in the early kick off. Luton host Barnet looking for a win to end 2016 with.
Best of the Rest
Grimsby Town and Blackpool keep on flattering to deceive in this division but someone will move forward on Saturday as they meet at Blundell Park. In form Cambridge will be looking to put some distance between them and the chasers when they head to Leyton Orient.
Betting
I’m going to round off the year with two bets but I have to admit I’m bottling opposing my own side. Bottling might not be the right word but I’m not opposing Luton.
The stats suggest Barnet should be backed but we’ve had a great month in League 2 and we’re yet to hit a loser in the division this month so I can pass up one bet but I certainly wouldn’t tell people not to back them at the current line and price. I don’t really want to sit there watching my side with money on the opposition. I accept some can do that but I don’t get any enjoyment from it and as there are two others I like I’ll pass that bet over.
So onto the bets I do like and neither will surprise regular readers as I’m opposing two sides I’ve gone against quite a bit recently. Notts County’s slump shows absolutely no signs of ending and now things are problematic off the field as well as on it. Carlisle are one of the better sides in this division and have a squad big enough to rotate a few players and it not hurt them. They head to Nottingham still with just one defeat all season and I expect them to win here.
The other bet is opposing a Newport side who are in a bad trot at the minute. They have lost their last five matches and that includes surrendering a 2-0 lead on Boxing Day and their manager has mentioned how he needs January reinforcements. Exeter are now five unbeaten and have only conceded one goal in that time. Exeter have the best away record in the league this season which says a lot and I think they’ll avoid defeat at the very worst and quite probably win the game.
