Skybet League Two returns on Saturday after the break for the FA Cup and now the second third of the season is about to begin. There is a pretty hectic schedule between now and Christmas especially for those still in the cups so all the sides will be looking to launch a good run or maintain one to enhance their position in the table.
Saturday’s fixtures are as follows: (3pm unless stated)
Newport v Carlisle 13:00
Blackpool v Notts County
Colchester v Leyton Orient
Crawley v Cambridge
Crewe v Plymouth
Exeter v Doncaster
Grimsby v Barnet
Hartlepool v Cheltenham
Luton v Accrington
Portsmouth v Mansfield
Stevenage v Yeovil
Wycombe v Morecambe
Big Matches
The match of the day in the division sees the runaway leaders Plymouth heading to a Crewe side who are hanging in the playoff positions. This is expected to be a test of Plymouth’s title credentials. Carlisle are Plymouth’s closest challengers and they head to bottom of the lot Newport in the early kick off.
Third placed Doncaster are struggling for consistency at the minute and they head down to Exeter while fourth placed Luton, fast becoming the draw specialists, host Accrington Stanley at Kenilworth Road. Portsmouth in fifth welcome Mansfield to Fratton Park.
Best of the Rest
Two of last season’s relegated sides meet as Colchester host Leyton Orient with the visitors looking in a great deal of disarray at the minute. Blackpool against Notts County is a clash between two of the bigger more famous sides in the division while Grimsby against Barnet is a match between two sides recently promoted from the Conference.
Betting
I’m going with a couple of away sides in this set of matches. I don’t like to get too involved after cup breaks because the rhythm of a lot of sides have been disrupted but these two both look perfectly good plays to me.
The first is the obvious play of the leaders Plymouth who are showing no signs of slowing down and who won on the road at Mansfield in the cup last weekend. They head to a Crewe side who have flattered to deceive a little in recent weeks and who go into this match without their first choice strike duo and if you need anything against the leaders it is your main strikers.
Plymouth lost their opening away game of the season up at Carlisle but given the journey distance and the fact they were still gelling back then that can be excused. They have been perfect on the road since then though and are showing no signs of slowing down. I’m on them against a potentially goal shy Crewe.
Portsmouth once again threatened that this might be their season to deliver the goods and they still might but there is little doubt they have hit the buffers at the minute particularly at Fratton Park. Mansfield head there on Saturday and they have already drawn at Luton, Crewe and Accrington this season so they aren’t easy to beat on their travels.
Portsmouth have now lost their last three matches at Fratton if you include the cup match last week while Mansfield’s only road defeat in the league was at the leaders Plymouth. I fancy them to get something out of this match so their large start on the Asian lines looks too good to ignore.
