It is the final set of fixtures in Skybet League 2 prior to Christmas on Saturday with the race for top spot, the playoffs and to avoid relegation all under the spotlight as we race towards the halfway stage of the season.
All 24 clubs are in action on Saturday with the action beginning slightly earlier at the Keepmoat Stadium where over 4,000 Grimsby fans are making the short trip to Doncaster.
Saturday’s fixtures are as follows (3pm unless stated):
Doncaster Rovers v Grimsby Town 12.30
Accrington Stanley v Plymouth Argyle
Barnet v Stevenage
Blackpool v Luton Town
Cambridge United v Crewe Alexandra
Carlisle United v Yeovil Town
Colchester United v Notts County
Crawley Town v Newport County
Exeter City v Mansfield Town
Morecambe v Cheltenham Town
Portsmouth v Hartlepool United
Wycombe Wanderers v Leyton Orient
Big Matches
The leaders Plymouth are one of a number of sides travelling crazy distances on Saturday. They head to Accrington but the match of the day in terms of league positions comes at Brunton Park where Carlisle host Yeovil. Third placed Doncaster host Grimsby in the early kick off while Portsmouth welcome Hartlepool United to Fratton Park. Two of the bigger sides in the division meet at Bloomfield Road when Blackpool entertain Luton.
Best of the Rest
There is a local derby between Barnet and Stevenage at The Hive while strugglers Leyton Orient head to the form side in the league Wycombe. Cheltenham and Morecambe look set for a relegation battle so their meeting at the Globe Arena could be huge for both with the same being said for Crawley and Newport who meet in Sussex.
Betting
I have to say this isn’t a card for me to go mad in. Some of these journeys are ridiculous lengths and although some clubs will go up on Friday night not everyone will have that luxury so there is a bit of guesswork in some of those. I’d rather not guess so I’ll just play safe this weekend and go with one to take us into the busy Christmas period.
Cambridge have found some real form lately with four wins from their last five and I think they have a great chance of another on Saturday when they host a Crewe side, who while they might not admit it, look to be struggling in the wake of the negative attention that is on them at the minute.
Crewe have only won two of their last 10 matches after a fast start to the season and have failed to find the net in three of their last four. I don’t think there is a coincidence in that. Everything that is going on away from the pitch has to be unsettling and Cambridge are in the form to take advantage of that. Luke Berry has found the form which earned him a move to Barnsley a couple of years ago and off the back of a 5-0 win at Hartlepool last week I’m expecting the U’s to deliver another here.
