There is near enough another full round of fixtures in Skybet League 2 on Tuesday night with 22 of the 24 clubs playing, many of them playing to better their potential of either promotion or survival.
Tuesday night’s fixtures are as follows:
Barnet v Plymouth
Bristol Rovers v Hartlepool
Cambridge v Wycombe
Carlisle v Leyton Orient
Crawley v Newport
Exeter v Portsmouth
Luton v Morecambe
Northampton v Wimbledon
Notts County v Dag & Red
Oxford Utd v York
Yeovil v Accrington
There are a number of sides who go into this set of fixtures pretty short and I’m always reluctant to get involved in too many short prices on midweek matches at this stage of the season. Resources at this level get quite tight at this time of year and two matches in three days is never easy so I wouldn’t be surprised to see some shocks among the results here.
On a normal set of matches I would consider taking the likes of Bristol Rovers, Portsmouth, Notts County and Accrington but they all just look too short to me here. I’m still tempted by Oxford, particularly having seen York with my own eyes on Saturday but their home record gives little confidence.
Even the likes of Plymouth and Northampton, often so reliable in this campaign, face tricky matches so offer little value at the prices so betting opportunities in this round don’t jump out at us. In the end I’ve decided to stick with what I know and that is focus on the Luton game.
Luton have finally recorded back to back wins for the first time since November and now they have an ideal chance for three in a row against a Morecambe side who they beat 3-1 at the Globe Arena earlier in the season and who have lost seven of their last eight matches.
Performances haven’t always been great under Nathan Jones but he is slowly imposing his style on his side and they are beginning to benefit from that. He wasn’t impressed with the performance in the win on Saturday and has let everyone know about it so I’m expecting Luton to be at it from the off here.
Luton have struggled at home this season but they’ve generally struggled against sides who have parked the bus, spoilt the game and generally been hard to break down but Morecambe aren’t going to be like that. At no stage this season have they shown they can defend and indeed it was some 11 matches ago that they last kept a clean sheet.
With Luton finally getting going in front of goal and plenty of attacking options to come off the bench should they need them I expect the home side to come through here and the fact they have drifted to 10/11 to win makes them a perfectly attractive bet.
I’m also going to have a nibble of Luton to win and both teams to score. Although Luton are improving in front of goal they have handed out more gifts than Santa Claus at the back this season and York benefitted from the biggest howler of the lot on Saturday.
You have to go back to the 21st November for the last time Morecambe didn’t score a goal so I won’t be surprised if they score here but I will be surprised if with all the possession they will have Luton don’t score at least one more. I think it will be more comfortable than that though.
