The rest of the week’s Specsavers County Championship fixtures get underway on Sunday morning when four more games get going as both divisions really begin to take shape. In Division One it is the lower end of the table in the spotlight this week while the title challengers get the focus in the second division.
Division One
The two matches in this division see Hampshire hosting Surrey in a huge basement battle at the Ageas Bowl while in Nottingham two sides looking to continue to move out of trouble meet as Nottinghamshire take on Somerset at Trent Bridge.
Hampshire against Surrey is a huge match but annoyingly from a betting point of view they both miss big players to the England Lions set up. Hampshire lose Liam Dawson while Surrey see Tom Curran head away and that isn’t ideal. With Kumar Sangakkara and Ravi Rampaul away as well I think Surrey are there for the taking but with Hampshire without Michael Carberry for obvious reasons I’m not sure they are the side to take advantage.
Somerset would have been another side to lose players to the Lions but Jamie Overton is injured instead. Either way that isn’t ideal when they head to a Nottinghamshire who are actually going along ok at the minute and apart from Stuart Broad and Jake Ball have pretty much the squad they usually have.
Somerset’s last gasp defeat last week has really hurt them whereas Nottinghamshire ran Lancashire really close and might just be coming into a good run of form now that Chris Read is back. Nottinghamshire haven’t always been convincing this season but with Overton out I’d make them slight favourites here so I’ll get on them.
Division Two
Both Kent and Sussex will feel they are in with every chance of going up after Essex’s defeat on Saturday but again they both miss players. Daniel Bell-Drummond and Sam Billings are away for Kent while Matt Coles still isn’t being considered for selection while Ed Joyce is a big loss for Sussex.
If I was betting then I’d probably suggest Sussex could cope better even allowing for how good Joyce is at the minute but his absence does put me off betting on the match while the other game between Glamorgan and Derbyshire offers no real betting potential with both sides missing players and far too inconsistent to be relied upon.
