It is almost time for Super Bowl LI which will have one of the biggest global audiences of any event of the year and the betting industry has latched onto that with well over 250 markets priced up for the evening’s entertainment.
You can bet on a huge variety of things on Super Bowl night. Some of the weirder specials for Sunday night include the colour of Lady Gaga’s hair during the half time show and which half time advert will get the most YouTube views.
We’re not getting involved in those markets but everybody loves a bet on the Super Bowl so here are three specials markets we will get stuck into to offer you some value to sit on for the big game.
Total Passing Yards
We are expecting a pass dominated Super Bowl and if one side gets significantly ahead of the other then that is only going to enhance that. We have two gunslingers on show here in Matt Ryan and Tom Brady and some of the best receivers in the game not to mention a couple of running backs who bank the yardage with the check downs and screen plays.
It would be a surprise if both quarterbacks don’t throw for 300 yards in this match but either could easily go off and head towards 400 yards and beyond so the likelihood of the total passing yards exceeding 635.5 yards has to be high.
First Touchdown Scorer
We are expecting plenty of touchdowns in this match and the identity of the player to score the first one is always a popular wager. Generally the running backs head the betting here but we’re going to think a little outside of the box and aim for some value and a decent price.
Tom Brady absolutely loves his tight ends and with Rob Gronkowski out injured the main man in that department is Martellus Bennett. He is a 16/1 shot and if an early New England drive gets to the red zone we can expect him to be targeted in a passing play. Atlanta have struggled against tight ends all season and that isn’t likely to change here so the 16/1 on Bennett to open the touchdown scoring looks perfectly acceptable.
Super Bowl MVP
Given that we believe Atlanta will win this match and the fact the MVP never goes to a losing player we are focusing on Falcons players in this Super Bowl. Quarterbacks used to be an automatic selection for the MVP and Matt Ryan has already been announced as the season MVP so it is natural that his odds are short but two of the last three awards have gone to players away from the quarterback so there is a chance to search for value.
The obvious pick if you are to swerve Ryan is to go for Julio Jones but Bill Belicheck, the New England coach loves to take a weapon away and I’m sure he’ll look to restrict Jones’ output. Vic Beasley could be a leading player given that he headed the sack list for the season and a couple of big plays from him could catch the eye.
I expect an offensive Super Bowl though so I expect the MVP to be an offensive player. In order for New England to restrict Jones they are going to have to commit a couple of men to him or line their formation up to deny him space.
That could open up space for someone closer to the line of scrimmage and with that in mind there is a chance Tevin Coleman could go off in this match. He is a powerful runner of the ball with excellent reception skills who can evade tackles and if he can find the end zone a couple of times and make a couple of other appealing plays he could just steal the coveted award.
