It is another heavy night of Super League action on Friday as the top three in the table going into the weekend all do battle when Hull FC, Wigan and Warrington take to the field across the four matches in play on the evening.
Warrington and Hull FC look set for another scrap for the League Leaders Shield while Wigan won’t have given up hope of topping the table either. With just two rounds of matches left after this one the evening is huge. Hull FC face Wigan on the TV and we’ll begin with that match.
Hull FC vs Wigan Warriors
Both sides go into this match off the back of disappointing results in the Super League last week. In Hull FC’s case that was understandable to an extent. They had won the cup the week before and they made changes and also they went to the form horses in St Helens so we can cut them a little bit of slack.
Wigan’s defeat was much more surprising given that it was at home and to a Widnes side who prior to that had shown little in the way of form and who many were thinking might have been done for the season. Wigan looked clueless in attack in that match and in truth their defence wasn’t a whole lot better which has to be a concern for Shaun Wane.
You would think Wigan would improve for having Matty Smith back after he missed last week with illness but Hull FC have had their number twice already this season and I still maintain Wigan aren’t the same side when Sean O’Loughlin isn’t on the field. Hull FC have all their influential players back for this match and I’m confident they can prove a score too good for a struggling Wigan.
Warrington Wolves vs Widnes Vikings
Widnes go into their second tough away game in a number of weeks buoyed by their win over Wigan but they have come up short on two previous occasions against Warrington and with the Wolves having put their cup final disappointment behind them last week to hit top spot the home side know if they win out they will claim the leaders shield.
Warrington have Kurt Gidley back for this match after he missed last week’s win due to a knock he sustained in the cup final so you would think they will go from strength to strength but after their win over Wigan this doesn’t feel like the week to take Widnes on so I’ll leave this one alone.
Wakefield Trinity Wildcats vs Catalans Dragons
Two sides who are playing out the season meet at Belle Vue on Friday night. To say both sides are in awful form would be an understatement but someone has to win this match although we wouldn’t be predicting with any confidence if we tried to guess who.
You could make the case for Wakefield given they are heavy odds against in a match which could go either way but both sides are decimated by injuries and it isn’t one we want to get into, value or no value.
Leeds Rhinos vs Batley Bulldogs
We all knew Leeds would retain their Super League status and a win here would confirm that and it is hard to see any other result. Batley had a good win over Featherstone last week but Leigh aside we’ve seen the gulf between the Super League and the Championship in this qualifiers campaign so far.
The fact they are having to cover a 40pt handicap says everything we need to know about their likelihood of winning but those sized handicaps don’t interest me. If Leeds want to cover it they probably will but they have no need to so we’ll sit this one out as well.
