The bulk of this weekend’s Super League matches take place on Friday night as no fewer than four matches are played out in full. We have one match on the TV and three away from the cameras in a busy night in the top flight. We’ll kick things off with the TV match.
St Helens vs Warrington
When the season began you could be forgiven for thinking this would be a top of the table showdown but that isn’t the case. Warrington have been so bad this season that they begin the night bottom of the pile and while St Helens haven’t been much better they are slightly higher up the table.
St Helens do at least have last week’s win in France to build on and the anticipated return of Matty Smith should add even more spark and life to their attack which should have the Saints in good order. Warrington get a spark of their own back here in Stefan Ratchford but they have lost Tom Lineham and Ryan Atkins which isn’t ideal.
St Helens haven’t been fantastic this season but Warrington looked as clueless as they have ever looked at Leigh last week. Warrington won’t win this game down the middle and I’m not convinced they’ve got enough in wider areas to win it either. I’m with the Saints here.
Huddersfield vs Leeds
Huddersfield came out of last weekend with good credit after they held the champions Wigan to a draw and now they will look to see off their Yorkshire rivals Leeds who have now had two wins on the bounce.
I’m still in no rush to believe in the Giants. I just think they took advantage of Wigan’s injuries last week. Leeds have been in excellent form lately and if I was pushed I’d take them to win and cover eight points but I’m still not totally sold on Leeds either which I’ll take as a sign to leave this alone.
Widnes vs Salford
Salford head into their match at Widnes off the back of being the first side to knock Castleford off their perch this season. Widnes have struggled throughout the campaign and I expect them to struggle here too.
Widnes have home advantage but I think they might need more than that. That said although Salford are clearly a much improved side we’re not yet at the stage where I’m comfortable taking them at odds on away from home so I’ll sit this one out too.
Wigan vs Hull FC
The champions will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing draw with Huddersfield when they host last season’s surprise package Hull FC. Hull FC have been in good form this season and a win here will send them back to the top just like last year.
Wigan have been plagued by injuries throughout the campaign so far and now they have lost Sean O’Loughlin and Liam Farrell too and there is only so far this academy of theirs will take them. Hull FC have a couple of absentees but they look in a much better shape than the Warriors right now and they can saunter past Wigan here.
