We have reached Thursday and that means another round of Super League matches is about to begin and the latest set of games starts with the Salford Red Devils hosting St Helens in a match between two of the form sides in the league.
Salford will join the logjam on ten points with a win here while St Helens will move level with their opponents should they get the better of them in this encounter.
Salford Red Devils
After one win in their first three matches, Salford Red Devils have won three of their last four including being the only side to beat Castleford so far this season and the way they are playing this year that is an exceptional result even allowing for a monsoon which definitely helped Salford in that match.
You have to give the Doctor credit for the signings he has made for this Salford side and it appears that they have come together and are performing how Mr Koukash has claimed they would for a few years now. They haven’t been shipping points which is half the battle because they have the playmakers to open any side up.
St Helens
After three defeats on the trot St Helens have come good over the last couple of weeks too. They have been to France and won and then thrashed Warrington last week although just how much of a result that is remains to be seen given that Warrington haven’t won a single match this season to date.
The return to a more established half back pairing has ignited St Helens’ season and they needed some spark adding to their attack because they have generally defended well for the most part this season. They haven’t conceded more than 24pts in a match yet so if they can stay on top of things in attack they’ll be fine.
Team News
Salford are going to be without Junior Sa’u for this match as he is out with an illness. Jake Bibby has been added to the squad in his place and could come into the side.
After the return of Matty Smith last week, St Helens have another key man back here as Jonny Lomax is back in the squad after injury. Saints are without Adam Swift for this one.
Betting
With both sides going into this match with confidence high I’m expecting a good game of rugby here but I think there is value on the home side. I say that because although St Helens have won their last two I couldn’t believe how bad Warrington were last week.
Admittedly one of Salford Red Devils’ recent wins were against a wretched Widnes Vikings side but their win over Castleford sets the benchmark form wise. I think the Red Devils are defending well enough to keep St Helens quiet in attack and if they can do that then the likes of Michael Dobson, Robert Lui and Todd Carney can pick enough holes in the Saints’ defence to get the job done.
