The next round of the Super League gets underway on Thursday with a couple of tasty looking Yorkshire derbies to get the juices flowing once again. We have one match on the TV here and one away from the cameras. As ever we’ll begin the preview with the TV match.
Castleford Tigers vs Leeds Rhinos
This should be a cracking game of rugby between the best side in the sport to watch right now in the Castleford Tigers and a Leeds Rhinos side that are never more dangerous than when they have been written off and getting an eight point start with most firms the Rhinos have certainly been that.
Castleford head into the match with a pair of wins to their name but it hasn’t just been the wins which have caught the eye, the manner of them and the style they have been produced in have been of the highest quality. They will miss Rangi Chase here who has reportedly been up to no good again.
Leeds also have a pair of wins to their name this season but they have a defeat too. Those two wins have come over inferior opposition so they will need to up it dramatically if they are to take the points away from The Jungle.
Castleford are such a good side to watch right now and I expect them to win this but the Rangi Chase situation is a bit off-putting and I’ll tentatively avoid a bet on them despite my hunch that they will win. They are the sort of side we can enjoy watching without the need for a bet.
Huddersfield Giants vs Hull FC
The other match comes from the John Smith’s Stadium where a Huddersfield side who are surprising many with two wins from three so far take on a Hull FC team who will still be reeling from their defeat to the Catalans Dragons last week.
In fairness to the Giants they have started the season much better than I thought they would but a real test comes for them here. Jermaine McGillvary is out with injury and he’s a huge miss while Ukuma Ta’ai’s suspension hasn’t come at a great time either.
Hull FC missed Albert Kelly badly in that match last week so they will be delighted that he is back for this one. Gareth Ellis will miss out though which isn’t ideal but the one thing we know about this Hull side is even in Ellis’ absence they are strong and tough and won’t lack for effort or energy.
I think Hull FC will win this match but I don’t see it being a landslide. Huddersfield’s defence deserves a little bit of credit and Hull FC are never the most free scoring side in the competition but with McGillvary out injured I’m expecting the visitors to have a bit too much and they can run out winners by between one and 12pts.
