Three matches make up a tasty looking card in the Super League on Friday night with the undoubted highlight the battle of the top two at the Halliwell Jones Stadium. We got underway for the round of games in fine style on Thursday evening and are set for some great stuff on Friday.
We have one match on the television from the three taking place and that is obviously the top of the table clash. There are plenty of other ways of keeping up to date with the other games on the evening though. We’ll kick off with that TV game.
Warrington Wolves vs St Helens
The big match of the night features the top two in the Super League table in a clash which is probably more important for the home side Warrington Wolves than it is the leaders St Helens, but this could give us some Old Trafford pointers.
This is pretty much the last chance Warrington have of getting themselves into the leaders shield mix but realistically they are looking to hold off Hull FC and any other chasers in order to finish second. St Helens are blazing a trail at the top and just like last season their test now is to maintain their intensity from here right through until the play-offs. It sounds easy but isn’t that easy.
This is a chance to lay a marker down for St Helens and I don’t expect them to pass it up. They might be odds on but they could easily be a little shorter so they still appeal even at the price. Saints are top for a reason and after dropping to defeat in their last away match they will want to get back on track here. That is what I expect to happen.
Wigan Warriors vs Salford Red Devils
After seeing Hull KR pick up a win in the battle to avoid the drop on Thursday night, Wigan Warriors will be looking to do likewise when they host the Salford Red Devils in what is a local derby with plenty of meaning.
Wigan will fancy their chances of coming through here because it remains to be seen how Salford will go after the loss of Robert Lui. I expect Wigan to win this match but I accept they are under a fair amount of pressure in this one and they are pretty short anyway in fairness. This isn’t a game I want to get involved in so I’m happy to keep my money in my pocket here.
Wakefield Trinity vs Huddersfield Giants
The other match on the night sees two of the out of form sides meeting at Belle Vue in what is a big contest for each of Wakefield Trinity and Huddersfield Giants as they battle to avoid getting sucked right into the relegation battle.
Wakefield haven’t won since they beat Huddersfield in early May while Huddersfield are in the middle of another of their slumps which tend to last a while when they come along. That isn’t ideal from a betting point of view so this really is another one which is easy to leave alone. I’ll leave my betting with the TV game.
