Super League XXV – Thursday 3rd September Matches Tips and Betting Preview

The Super League continues on Thursday evening with what was scheduled to be a triple header at Headingley but which has been downgraded to a double header after a match was cancelled because of yet more positive Covid-19 tests.

The two matches that remain should both be full of entertainment though and with three of the better sides in the competition and a team who are playing with complete freedom on show, this should be a good night of rugby league. As has been the case since the restart both matches are live on Sky Sports.

The Format

There has been a change in the format of the season. The ‘loop matches’ and Magic Weekend have bitten the dust so teams will play 20 regular season matches ahead of the playoffs. Scrums are a thing of the past for the remainder of the season. They are being replaced with a tap restart to prevent the spread of the virus. The ‘six to go’ rule that is being used in NRL is also coming into the Super League with more eyes likely to be on the game with other sports yet to get back up and running.

Hull KR vs Wigan Warriors (18.00)

The first match of the day sees the team bottom of the pile taking on the side who are top of the table when Hull KR go up against Wigan Warriors in a clash which has a one sided feel to it as far as the odds for it are concerned.

Hull KR go into this match with that unwanted record of being the lowest scorers in the competition and having conceded the most amount of points of anyone too so you feel they are there for the taking for a Wigan unit who look to be getting better and better with every match that they play. I’m in no rush to be chasing 20+ points handicaps given the short turnaround between the matches though so I’ll sit this out despite common logic dictating that Wigan will probably cover.

Salford Red Devils vs Castleford Tigers (20.15)

The second match of the night looks to be the pick of them when the beaten Grand Finalists of last season Salford Red Devils take on the former losers at Old Trafford in the shape of Castleford Tigers. Both teams have struggled a bit since the restart but there is a chance for one of them to put things right here.

Salford have hardly played since the restart having been caught up in the Hull FC positive Covid-19 testing saga so the last thing they needed was to lose winger Ken Sio early on at the weekend with no other back in their squad to replace him. They paid the price accordingly and will want to prove their worth here. Castleford Tigers are yet to win since the restart but they’ve given a couple of competitive displays and just need that little bit of nous around the opposing try line and they’ll be fine.

I’m happy to take over 44.5 points here. I think both sides are more comfortable attacking the opposing try line than defending it and with both sides playing on Saturday you’ve got to think there will be some fatigue in both teams the longer this one goes on so defences might get opened up a little easier. Salford leaked 50 to Leeds anyway and Castleford have already been taken to the cleaners by Catalans since the restart. This line looks quite low so I’m happy to take the over here.
