Super League XXVI – Warrington Wolves vs Wigan Warriors Tips, TV and Betting Preview

The Super League season continues to be disrupted by Covid-19 issues but there is one match on Wednesday evening and it could be a pivotal one for the two teams involved as the Warrington Wolves host the Wigan Warriors at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Warrington have been one of the teams of the season so far and can cement that status with a win here whereas Wigan have had to negotiate some choppy waters to date and will be eager to show their credentials here.

Where to watch

The match will be shown live and in full on the Sky Sports Arena channel. The build up to the action will commence at 7.30pm with the match kicking off 15 minutes later.

Warrington Wolves

Warrington are having a good season in the Super League. They have won nine of their 13 outings and will be expected to kick on and not only make the play-offs from here but be competitive in them when they come along. They did see a four match winning burst come to a close last time out though when they were beaten by the Leeds Rhinos. With all the Covid-19 issues around the league though, that match was some 23 days ago so Warrington will certainly be fresh coming in here.

The important thing Warrington need to guard against is rust. They will only be able to do that once the match starts but quite often in the middle of a season a break is no bad thing. Whether a team benefits from three weeks off remains to be seen but it does mean that in the main the Wolves are close to full strength which will certainly help them in their quest here. The last of those four wins in that streak was a 40-14 win at the DW Stadium against this opponent so that will also give them confidence.

Wigan Warriors

This has been anything but an easy campaign for the Wigan Warriors but they have still won 10 of their 15 matches and it is around this time in a normal campaign where they would click into gear and look to make their move towards the top of the table and position themselves strongly for a tilt at Old Trafford. Whether they are able to do that here given all the injuries and uncertainty remains to be seen but that is the challenge facing them.

The Warriors have played three times since Warrington were last on the paddock and they have won all three matches. You can pick holes in the form in that they have only played Huddersfield twice and Wakefield but when they had suffered five defeats on the spin prior to that, any wins are welcome. Wigan still aren’t flourishing in attack and have a lot of youngsters still looking to find their feet at this level but their defence seems to be improving and that is what much of their success is based on.

Team News

There was a chance that George Williams was going to make a high profile debut for the Warrington Wolves against his former club but Steve Price has ruled out that happening. Williams remains on the sidelines with his England teammate George Williams in an otherwise strong looking Warrington squad.

Wigan Warriors welcome a couple of key men back into their squad which will be a boost for Adrian Lam. John Bateman is a high profile returning player while Liam Byrne is another who is back in the squad. Wigan are still mixing and matching in the backs with Bevan French out for the season and Zak Hardaker still missing.

Betting

I expect the Wigan Warriors to improve as their young players find their feet at this level and some important players come back but they look up against it here against a Warrington Wolves side who are in possession of many of the cards they need. Wigan are missing stars at full-back which is a huge position in the attacking element of the game and some of their forwards face a daunting challenge in this match which isn’t ideal.

I keep on saying that Warrington aren’t the most reliable side known to man but they come in here fresh after three weeks off and if they can find their feet from the outset then they should have far too much for Wigan up the middle of the park and then the attacking strength needed to come past them with a bit in hand once again. As long as Warrington stay close while they get up to speed in the opening 20 minutes I expect them to dominate the rest of the game and fancy them to cover four points in this encounter.
