Super League XXVII – Saturday 4th June Matches Tips, TV and Betting Preview

The Super League continues on Saturday and we once again have the competition on terrestrial TV so it is another big day for the sport as it looks to build on the momentum that the Challenge Cup final gave it last week.

Two matches take place over the course of the day with the first of them that one on the TV while there will be radio commentaries and all the social media updates of the other game when that one kicks off.

Castleford Tigers vs Wigan Warriors (14.00 – Channel 4)

The first game of the day to kick off sees the Castleford Tigers welcoming the new Challenge Cup winners Wigan Warriors to The Jungle for what should be another entertaining encounter to be placed on free-to-air TV.

The Tigers go into the match occupying the final play-off spot and will be hoping to consolidate that here. Wigan have bigger fish to fry as they will be looking to move level on points with Catalans Dragons who are in second place. Bookmakers can’t split these two sides and I’m a little surprised by that. If you are a believer in history then you’ll be all over the Tigers here because eight of the last nine Challenge Cup winners have lost their Super League game after winning the cup. As ever with these things there is a caveat to that in that the cup final is usually much later in the season and sides who win it have had a heavy workload. We’re only three months into this season and there should be much more in the tanks at this stage of a campaign.

That makes me think history can be put in the bin here and we can take the team who are without doubt the better of the two. Wigan beat Castleford in the reverse meeting 32-22 and since then Cas have only won five Super League matches – against the bottom two, a terrible Leeds side at the time, a St Helens 3rd team and Hull KR missing their entire spine. I think they are flattered by their results a bit. Wigan have had enough time to recover from last week. We saw at Tottenham that their defence is still very strong and we also saw they can win without playing well. I think they’ll play better here and I expect the likes of Jai Field and Bevan French to show too much for a determined Castleford but one which might be flattered by their league position.

Toulouse Olympique vs St Helens (17.00)

The second match of the day is a repeat of the biggest shock of the Super League season so far as bottom of the pile Toulouse Olympique play host to the champions St Helens who will be like a wounded animal having lost the first meeting between the two.

The French outfit were getting in excess of 30 points on that occasion but pulled off the ultimate upset. Their only other win this season though has come against Wakefield Trinity and while they have been competitive in matches, a rested St Helens smarting from being turned over in the first game must be considered a daunting prospect. There is the sense that Saints will just want to come away from a potentially wet and greasy Toulouse with the win rather than run up the score but champion sides tend to want to prove a point so I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Saints run up the score should the opportunity arise. The forecast puts me off Saints covering but I’m not really wanting to trust the home side either.
