Super League XXVIII – Friday 7th July Matches Tips, TV and Betting Preview

Another round of matches begins in the Super League XXVIII season on Friday evening when half of the teams are in action on what might be a key night for a number of them as we head towards the closing stages of the first part of the campaign.

With this being a Friday night we have a TV match to enjoy over the course of the evening and with the other two matches going on at the same time we should receive plenty of updates on the others during the coverage.

Wakefield Trinity vs Wigan Warriors (19.45)

One of the matches on Friday night comes from Belle Vue as the bottom team Wakefield Trinity look to build on their season win of the season last week when they entertain a Wigan Warriors side with their eyes firmly set on the top end of the table.

Wigan begin the night in third place in the standings and will know the importance of finishing in the top two if they can so that they can miss the first round of the play-offs and host a semi-final. You would imagine that deep down they will be thinking they lose ground to those around them should they lose this match. Wakefield are just about clinging onto the coattails of Castleford Tigers above them and a win here could certainly make things interesting at the bottom of the table. Wakefield have been much more competitive since David Fifita arrived but I think winning this one is beyond them. Given Wigan will just want to win and get away unscathed I’m reluctant to get involved in handicaps so I’ll leave this one alone.

Castleford Tigers vs Leigh Leopards (20.00)

Two sides enjoying very different campaigns meet at The Jungle where the Castleford Tigers will look to ease their relegation fears when they host a Leigh Leopards who extraordinarily are eyeing up a shot at the League Leaders’ Shield.

This has been a campaign to forget for Castleford regardless of what happens between now and the end of it. They have just four wins on the campaign although at least two of them have been in their last four outings, although Leeds Rhinos fell apart at the Magic Weekend and Warrington were bang ordinary a couple of weeks ago. Leigh are flying at the minute. They are into the Challenge Cup semi-finals and have now moved up to second in Super League. Leigh have won 10 of their last 11 matches in all competitions with the only defeat in that time being away to Catalans where even in defeat they came out with credit having scored 30 points which not many do in France. I would imagine this will be a bit of a tussle to begin with but the longer it goes on I think the work rate and class of this Leigh side will come through and I expect them to win a shade cosily. Leigh won 30-6 in the reverse meeting and while this one may be tighter I still think they have a double digit win in them.

Warrington Wolves vs St Helens (20.00 – Sky Sports Arena)

The pick of the matches on Friday night comes from the Halliwell Jones Stadium where the Warrington Wolves will look to arrest a slide which has been going on too long for comfort when they host the champions St Helens.

Warrington go into this one having lost five of their last six matches in all competitions after starting the season like a house on fire. Their attack has suddenly come apart and in the five matches they have lost they have scored 62 points in total. That is not a positive sign when a tough as teak Saints defence comes to town. St Helens were slow out of the traps this season, which was understandable given their excursion to Australia and the success and emotion of the World Club Challenge win, but they have won seven of their last eight in all competitions and are coming to the boil nicely. In those seven wins they have kept the opposition below 18 points and given Warrington have lost an edge in their attack you would imagine St Helens will do that here. My concern is that St Helens were rotten at Hull FC a couple of weeks ago and the 22 points they put up on Castleford last week was less than par for the course of the season so maybe injuries are hindering them a little. If I had to I’d back Saints to cover but there isn’t the wiggle room I would like so I’ll leave this one alone.
