There are two more matches in the T20 World Cup 2021 on Wednesday with the first part of the double header seeing England continuing their campaign when they go up against Bangladesh in Abu Dhabi.
England emphatically won their opening match of the competition and a win here will move them onto the verge of qualifying for the semi-finals. Bangladesh were beaten in their Super 12s opener and defeat here could well end their campaign.
Bangladesh
It has been a bit of an up and down campaign for Bangladesh in this tournament so far. They went into the first round as emphatic favourites to make it through to this stage but could only come second in their group after being shocked by Scotland in their opening match. To their credit they came good in the two matches after that and dominated those. They are in the same situation again having lost their opening Super 12s match to Sri Lanka.
They didn’t necessarily play badly against Sri Lanka but when push came to shove to go and win the match with the ball they couldn’t get the wicket they needed until it was too late. That was a reverse of their displays in the first round where their bowlers were on top and their batting was sometimes a little less certain. If they can merge the batting effort of the previous game with the bowling displays of their opening three matches they could yet resurrect this campaign.
England
England have none of them troubles. Their opening win over West Indies was as emphatic as they come. It may or may not have been motivated by revenge but what it did do was enhance their net run rate so much that they already effectively have an extra point on the field in Group 1. There are no easy games in this group but you sense a win here and England would only need one more to secure a semi-final berth in some shape or form.
The win over West Indies was borne about by a brilliant bowling performance but they still lost fur wickets in a chase of just 56. Admittedly some of that was down to trying to win as quickly as possible and pretty much secure the net run rate to the level it should be in a win like that, but they still need a complete batting effort at some point early in this competition to show they can deliver in these conditions, which certainly aren’t optimum for their style of play.

Key Men
Mushriqur Rahim showed all his class in the defeat to Sri Lanka last time out and he has a good record against England in the longer two formats of the game so he could be a key player for Bangladesh here.
Bangladesh have lost wickets to a few banged in slower balls in this tournament so far so it might be that Tymal Mills is the man who could open things up with the ball for England. He has extreme pace but often picks up more wickets with his slower balls and in these conditions they could be tough to face.
Betting
I’ll go with one bet in this match which is on the performance of Mehidy Hasan. He has a line of just 22.5 which looks on the low side. He has made it to the crease in three of the four matches he has played in this tournament and in one of them, against Oman, he walked in at three. Should he walk in at that position here and finds his feet he would have more than enough time to cover this target with the bat alone. Even if he comes in at seven or eight where he is usually slated he’ll only need three runs to bring this target down to needing one wicket.
Mehidy didn’t take a wicket in the last game against Sri Lanka but is likely to be more suited to the pitches in Abu Dhabi which is more like the ones in Oman than the Sharjah one which actually played a lot better than we saw it doing in the IPL. Assuming he gets this down to one wicket, whether that is by three runs or a catch, I think he will cover this total because England are still not great players of spin and having not played him before they may not fully know what is coming. Whether he does it with the bat, ball or a combination of all three scoring lines this looks a little low to me. I’ll play the over.
