The Hundred 2024 – Manchester Originals vs Northern Superchargers Tips, TV and Betting Preview

Derby day in The Hundred continues in the second part of the double header in the competition on Sunday when we head back to Old Trafford for the clash between the Manchester Originals and the Northern Superchargers.

The Originals are playing the role of spoilers in this match but the Superchargers have entered must win territory. Anything but a win for them in this one and they are unlikely to make it into the top three.

Where to watch

The match will be shown live and in full on the Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Cricket channels with the build-up beginning at 5.30pm ahead of the first ball which comes at 6pm.

Manchester Originals

The Manchester Originals finally picked up their first win in their last match but that came far too late in the day for them to have any qualification scenarios heading into their last two games. They are playing for pride but to be fair they have threatened a win in a couple of their other matches so while they looked bang out of their depth at the beginning of the tournament, they have worked out some combinations which have made them competitive the longer it has gone on.

The big problem that Manchester had at the beginning of the campaign was their batting. A lot of that was down to the uncertainty around Jos Buttler and the late nature of that problem arising but they have stumbled on an opening partnership which has worked and the rest has followed from there. Having platforms for the batters to express themselves down the order gives them confidence and runs on the board assist the bowlers.

Northern Superchargers

After an absolutely horrendous start to their campaign, the Northern Superchargers looked to be getting into a position where they could dominate this competition but they have had a week to forget that has left them needing to regroup and come again if they are going to make the top three. They have two matches left and because of their net run rate being bad they have to win both of them and hope a result goes their way elsewhere in order to make the latter stages.

The big problem that the Superchargers have had in the last week is that their batting has left them down. They had absolutely no answer to the Birmingham Phoenix bowlers and while we shouldn’t really judge their match against the Welsh Fire because of all the rain around, to only score more than one run per ball in a 25 ball game doesn’t bode well. They will need to come off with the bat here because that is where their heavy investment was at the start of the tournament.

Key Players

Matthew Hurst has actually been the catalyst in turning the fortunes of the Manchester Originals around this term and if he can get going on his home ground then the bottom placed side could be in a good spot.

Nicholas Pooran hasn’t come off in the last few matches and even though this is a very strong Northern Superchargers batting unit, if he can come off here it would give his side a good position to win the game from.

Betting

I’m really surprised that we have a boundary line for this one which is as low as 32.5. We’ve seen that the Northern Superchargers batting is the most powerful in the tournament when it comes off and they are in a position where they don’t just need to win both of their matches but if they can do their net run rate some good too it would certainly help them. There is nothing in this Manchester attack to really contain them hence why we have seen Manchester involved in some high scoring matches recently.

The Superchargers bowling hasn’t really delivered all season and I see no reason why that is going to change here, especially when you consider that the Manchester batting are able to play with freedom and no competitive pressure on them. Both teams scored more than 150 when these two met at Headingley last Sunday in a match where there were 43 boundaries, albeit on a smaller ground than here. The difference between the two venues isn’t that much that we should get 11 fewer boundaries here. I’m happy to be on the over in this one.
