Ahead of the opening tee shots hit in The Masters on Thursday there is still time to look at the many side markets which have been priced up for the tournament, ranging from top nationality, miss and make the cut, finishing position and much more.
Usually these side markets offer up some great bets to accompany the outright punts but when you look through the number of offerings there isn’t a great deal which stands out this week. There are two bets that I like though.
Top Debutant
16 players will tee it up at Augusta National for the first time this week. A number of those are amateurs who I think we can eliminate from contention in this market which leaves us with around 10 players to have a go at. Debutants don’t have a great record when it comes to winning this title but in this market we’re only looking for the one that beats the others on debut not everyone else in the field.
There are a fair number of challengers here. Conditions might have come good for Sahith Theegala while Mito Pereira was a big time player before his exit for LIV Golf. Tom Kim and Taylor Moore have won on the PGA Tour this season and shouldn’t be dismissed while Ryan Fox is a regular winner on the DP World Tour. Another winner on the PGA Tour this term is the Arnold Palmer Invitational champion Kurt Kitayama who I think has the ideal game for Augusta. If there is a weakness in the American it is off the tee but there is little punishment for errant tee shots here and the conditions are going to make the fairways wider the longer the tournament goes on anyway. From the second shot in Kitayama is playing fantastic golf at the minute. He has a good short game and is a decent putter and he can be aggressive this week. These are ideal conditions for Kitayama and he is my pick from a talented crop of debutants this week.

Top Continental European
There are 10 players in the field this week from the continental part of Europe which makes for another decent betting market. If we take the two seniors out, Bernhard Langer and Jose Maria Olazabal, just because the softness of the course will probably make it too longer for them, then we are left with a select eight.
Jon Rahm could be very tough to beat in these conditions and part of me is tempted at even money but this is The Masters and while he is much better these days a Rahm meltdown can still take place. Of the rest the record of Sergio Garcia here might be significant but how competitively sharp will he be? The same can be said of Thomas Pieters. Viktor Hovland, Alex Noren and Sepp Straka all have poor records here or are out of nick and the track might be too long for Francesco Molinari. It won’t be too long for Adrian Meronk though and if the greens are softer and the breaks on them aren’t as dramatic as we usually see then the Polish star could have a good week. Meronk is long and generally straight off the tee and into the greens he is decent too. If he doesn’t freeze on the big occasion and settles early on then he has the tools to go well. Most bookmakers are paying three places on this market so at 19/1 he looks a good each way alternative to Rahm.
