UCI Cycling – Giro d’Italia 2017 Stage 13 – Betting Preview

Giro d’Italia 2017 Stage 13 takes place on Friday 19th May on roads that look like they were teleported from the Netherlands. For the second day running this looks like a big chance for the sprinters to win.

For the 4th stage in a row I tipped the winner – thank you Fernando Gaviria. Can anyone prevent him from making it four stage wins tomorrow? Read below to find out.

My KOTM tip – Omar Fraile also moved into the classification lead on stage 12. A solid few days!

Giro d’Italia 2017 Stage 13 – Stage Profile

Stage 13 of the 2017 Giro is 167kms in length. The stage starts in Reggio Emilia and finishes in Tortona.

I’m afraid this has all the makings of a dull days racing. There are no climbs on the route at all – it is pan flat.

There will only be two points of excitement – the finish in Tortona and the possibility of wind.

If there is no wind then it’s not really worth tuning in until the last 10-15kms.

The terrain means a break will go in the first hour – probably featuring the wildcard teams and a couple of others that are looking for a stage win. Their gap will be closely monitored and the sprint teams will haul them in the approaches to Tortona. This is the last stage that the sprinters have any chance of winning – their teams will not mess up the chase-down.

Giro d’Italia 2017 Stage 13 – Favourites

For the first time on a sprint stage I’m explanding this section to include five riders. A number of these riders will probably retire from the race after stage 13. Week three is all mountains and they have tp prepare for the Tour de France. This is their final chance at stepping on to the top of the days podium.

Fernando Gaviria (Quick-Step Floors) won his third stage on Thursday with relative ease. Gaviria was bumped a but in the run on but as a man with confidence was able to shake this off. His team were once again excellent providing brilliant support in the final run on the line. I cannot really bet against him on Friday even although his odds will be ridiculously short. They are short at 1.83!

Caleb Ewan (Orica-Scott) returned to the issue of bad positioning inside the final 3kms. At the 1km mark he was well behind his main rivals and unable to recover. There is no doubt he is quick but the inconsistency at the end means you cannot really back him. He is the first of three priced at 5.50.

Andre Greipel (Lotto-Soudal) looked poised to challenge for the win on Thursday but slipped back to 8th place at the line. Greipel just doesn’t look like he has the speed to handle Gaviria in the remaining stages of this race. Odds of 5.50 don’t tempt me here.

Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) grabbed another third place finish on stage 12. He is probably the most consistent and reliable challenger to Gaviria right now. Bora have been good in the final 3kms on the last two sprint finishes. This bodes well for stage 13 too and his odds of 5.50 work on the EW.

Jakub Marezcko (Wilier Triestina-Sella Italia) nabbed his 2nd stage runner-up position of the Giro in stage 12. I hinted in yesterday’s preview that he does have a lot of speed. For now he lacks some experience and does not ride on the strongest team but is producing anyway. Marezcko easily won the head-to-head bet I suggested with Sacha Modolo and now is a definite threat for a stage win. Of the top 5 he probably has the best value at 7.50.

Giro d’Italia 2017 Stage 13 – Outsiders

Realistically, these guys have no chance. I’m not even going to add their odds to this preview.

Phil Bauhaus (Sunweb) is improving as the race progresses and finished in 4th (his high spot so far in the Giro). Bauhaus is now a borderline EW betting prospect.

Sacha Modolo (UAE Team Emirates) got into position to go for the bunch-sprint on stage 12 but could only finish in 7th – some distance behind the winner. I cannot see a big improvement on Friday.

Modolo’s team-mate Roberto Ferrari continues to defy father-time by finishing in the top 10 again (10th) on stage 12. I think that’s about as good a result as he can hope for tomorrow.

Japser Stuyven (Trek-Segafredo) is the only other rider worth a mention. He got another top ten with a 9th placing on Thursday. Again, like the rest in this group he was a way behind the top 3.

Giro d’Italia 2017 Stage 13 – Tips

I’m almost exclucively using Bet365 because they are the first bookmaker to provide odds on the stages. You may be able to obtain slightly higher odds elsewhere is you are patient. Just the one bet for stage 13 as the head-to-head odds are awful.

WON – Bet on Fernando Gaviria to win stage 13 with a 3.5/10 stake at 1.83 with Bet365.
