NFL 2022 – Los Angeles Chargers @ San Francisco 49ers Tips and Betting Preview

A historic day in the NFL ends with the Sunday Night Football which this week takes us to California as the San Francisco 49ers welcome the Los Angeles Chargers in a clash which pits two sides who are looking to chase down division leaders against each other.

The 49ers have seen the Seattle Seahawks lose in Germany already and will be looking to take advantage of that, while the Chargers will know they really need to win this one to keep up with the pace being set by the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC West.

San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers ended a two-game losing streak when they got the better of the Los Angeles Rams last week and now they go in search of a double from the Hollywood city when the Chargers come to town. That win last week levelled up the San Francisco ledger and if they can follow it up here they will be right on the heels of the Seattle Seahawks heading into the second half of the campaign. Defeat would leave them with plenty of work to do.

The 49ers had their bye last week so they will have had time to get some players back from injury but perhaps just as importantly they have had the opportunity to just reset and ensure Jimmy G has everything in place to go on a title charge after they began the season riding the Trey Lance train. They have also had a week to get Christian McCaffrey more familiar with the play book so we should see a much better San Francisco side here.

Los Angeles Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers were strongly touted for a crack at the Super Bowl this season but two defeats in their opening three matches soon had people questioning their selection, particularly when gun quarterback Justin Herbert was injured and injuries were beginning to hurt the Chargers right throughout the roster. Either side of their bye week they have won four of their last five though and sit 5-3 for the season and well in the hunt for either the AFC West title or a wildcard spot.

If you were being critical you would argue that the Chargers’ offense hasn’t really got going this season and you would imagine over the second part of the campaign that side of the ball is really going to need to come to the party if the Chargers are to justify the pre-season hype. One of the reasons why they were so fancied was the work they had done on their defence and to be fair there are signs that they are coming to the boil.

Betting

When this fixture was coming around I thought that we might be in for a classic game but the closer to kick off we have got the less sure I am. That is largely because the Los Angeles Chargers could be without two huge players in Keenan Allen and Mike Williams. That has been reflected in the prices and the spread which now has the San Francisco 49ers being asked to cover slightly more than a touchdown which I’m not completely comfortable with.

The point line hasn’t really had much done to it though and might be on the high side at 45.5. You would have thought that the 49ers defence was going to combat the passing game of the Chargers anyway let alone having it slightly easier with a couple of big receivers missing but there is enough in the Los Angeles defence to keep San Francisco honest. This is a must-win game for both sides which is another factor in keeping the scoring low. I’ll play the under here.
