Welcome to our Giro d’Italia daily coverage. Here we are previewing the Giro d’Italia Stage One – Prologue Time trial in Apledoorn, Netherlands to be raced on 6th May 2016.
This is a short timetrial in a city and it is pan flat. The map shows the route which is not very technical with the exception of one turn.
This means the riders who have a history of strong time-trial results will come to the fore. They will be able to power their way through the course and challenge for the first Maglio Rosa.
Fabian Cancellera (Trek), Tom Dumoulin (Argos-Shimano), Jos van Emden (Rabobank) and Bob Jungels (Etixx-Quick-Step) are thr four riders most likely to challenge for victory.
Cancellera, the greatest time trailer of his generation, had started as pre-event favourite but there are rumours he is unwell so he has been usurped in the bookies odds by Dumoulin.
Dumoulin is now favourite to win the stage on home soil. He has an impressive time-trial pedigree and will be very close to the top on a course that suits him. His price currently ranges from 1.83-2.1 and I see little value in this so will look elsewhere.
Cancellera has moved out to roughly 3.0 at most bookies but the fact he is ‘unwell’ might mean he drops a handful of seconds and that will be enough to knock him out of contention.
Van Emden sits nicely as third favourite. He had a breakthrough in 2015 but has not reached those heights this year so we will not be backing him here today.
For me the value play is Bob Jungels. He finished 3rd in the Tour de Romandie Time-trial over a much more difficult course 10 days ago. He has good form and his price is great as an Each Way selection.
The weather is expected to be good throughout. The wind might change direction but over such a short urban course shouldn’t change the outcome of the prologue.
NOTE – Bookmakers are only paying out on top 2 in the Prologue.
