The second round of the two singles draws is the main focus of attention on Day 3 of the US Open out in New York on Wednesday on a day where the doubles action is due to get underway around the Flushing Meadows grounds.
I say due to get underway but the remnants of Hurricane Ida is making its way to this part of the world on Wednesday so there is likely to be very little play on the outside courts. I’m not going to guess who might and might not play out there and I don’t want to bet and then find out a player I’m taking on has the extra day of rest so for this preview I’ll focus purely on the main two courts which have a roof and therefore has play guaranteed.
Arthur Ashe Stadium
It is the defending champion Naomi Osaka who gets the action underway on the Arthur Ashe Stadium where the roof will near enough undoubtedly be on throughout. The Japanese superstar will take on the relatively unknown Olga Danilovic before the men’s second seed steps back out onto the main court as Daniil Medvedev continues his challenge for a first Grand Slam title when he meets Dominik Koepfer for a place in the third round of the event.
The night session looks a good one on Wednesday and it gets underway with two big hitting Americans potentially slugging it out when Coco Gauff faces the former champion Sloane Stephens in the pick of the women’s matches on Wednesday. The action on the main court concludes with Stefanos Tsitsipas in action. He probably wishes he was on an outside court and getting a day off after his five-set epic on Monday but that isn’t the case. Adrian Mannarino will hope to take advantage of any fatigue.

Louis Armstrong Stadium
We have another Grand Slam champion opening up the play on the second court on Wednesday as Garbine Muguruza gets us underway when she battles against Andrea Petkovic before the beaten 2020 finalist Victoria Azarenka is back on show. She meets the lowly ranked Italian player Jasmine Paolini. The day session concludes with one of the American players to have made it through in action when Frances Tiafoe meets Guido Pella.
There will be a night session on the Armstrong court as well and that begins with a men’s match between the former finalist Kevin Anderson and a Diego Schwartzman who often punches above his weight in this tournament. That is a real clash of styles that one while the former winner Angelique Kerber is assigned the task of closing out the show on Wednesday when she goes for revenge against the woman who dumped her out of the French Open in Anna Kalinina.
Betting
With only nine matches likely to see any play on Wednesday such is the dismal outlook of the weather forecast, there isn’t a huge amount that I like over the course of the day, largely because a fair few of those matches have a one-sided look to them. There were a couple of matches over on Armstrong that I was hoping to pull the trigger on but the odds and the lines are about right for them which is annoying. There is one bet I fancy though.
That comes in the night session match between Sloane Stephens and Coco Gauff on the Arthur Ashe Stadium where I think the outsider might be a little overpriced. Stephens knows how to make it through the draw here as a former champion and that means we know she has no issues with the atmosphere of a night session match in New York either. She has already seen off one big hitting American in Madison Keys and that should have primed her for the battle with a Coco Gauff who is a little too inconsistent at this stage of her career for me and who is starting to come out second in a lot of big matches. Stephens is actually playing a lot better than her American hard court record suggests this season and I think she can take it to Gauff here. Gauff will need to be at her best here but there are a few weaknesses to expose and at the prices I’ll back Stephens to expose them.
