The last 16 of both of the singles draws concludes at the WDF World Darts Championship on Thursday on what should be another great day of darts to build on what was a fantastic night of arrers on Wednesday.
This tournament sparked into life in that evening session on Wednesday and now that everyone involved in the men’s draw have played a match on the stage we should expect the quality to keep on rising.
Afternoon Session
The day begins with the confident operator Neil Duff looking to make the quarter final of the draw. He will take on a Nick Fullwell who hasn’t really been spoken about as a potential winner of this event even though he has his PDC tour card. When they are done the favourite for the women’s competition will get her campaign underway when Beau Greaves takes on the less hyped Veronika Ihasz, who looked sneakily good in the first round.
Two men’s matches conclude the afternoon play and we should get a couple of cracking contests to finish with. Jim McEwan had the highest average of the week before Richard Veenstra told him to hold his beer and he’ll bid for a quarter final spot when he meets Michael Warburton. The session finishes with the WDF number one ranked player James Hurrell on show. He takes on the underrated Ryan de Vreede for a place in the last eight.

Evening Session
The evening session on Wednesday was absolutely fantastic and we should get much more of the same on Thursday night and the action gets underway with Wayne Warren continuing his title defence when he goes up against the potential winner in Cameron Menzies. Once they are done the pick of the women’s draw so far goes onto stage when Aileen de Graaf meets the other defending champion Mikuru Suzuki, who will be hoping to show all her class after a struggle in the opening round.
We finish the day with two more men’s matches as the number two seed Thibault Tricole goes up against the Muffin Man Steve Hine who is enjoying a very encouraging week so far. The final match of the last 16 sees Andy Baetens looking to build on his win over Dave Parletti in the previous round when he takes on a Scott Marsh whose outings in the Live League would make him a contender for the title if he can repeat that form.
Betting
I like a couple of bets over the course of the day on Thursday. The first of those comes in the form of Ryan de Vreede to shock the top ranked James Hurrell. Hurrell is obviously a good player. You don’t get to the number one ranking in anything if you’re not but he didn’t do himself justice in the opening game and while he is entitled to come on for the run he will have to improve to beat de Vreede. The Dutch ace was almost written off when coming here but he has seen off Francesco Raschini and Jules van Dongen so far. He struggled past the Italian but looked a lot better against van Dongen in the last game and has probably achieved what he wanted to in this event and can throw with a bit of freedom. I’m not sure Hurrell will be able to do that with his new status as England captain and world number one. At the prices I like de Vreede to cause an upset.
There was bits and pieces to like about the display of Thibault Tricole in the second round but his doubling certainly wasn’t one of them and if that trend creeps into his game on Thursday evening he will be beaten by Steve Hine. I like Hine at this level. He is the sort of player who does nothing badly but nothing exceptionally. He is just solid and doesn’t beat himself. You would imagine Tricole will score the better of the two but if his finishing hasn’t improved it won’t count for much because he was horrendous against Shawn Burt in that department. Burt baulked at the winning post but I don’t expect Hine to make that mistake and see him as clear value to win this last 16 encounter.
