Wimbledon 2019 – Day 5 Tips and Betting Preview

The third round of the singles action at Wimbledon will begin on Friday and it will do so with a buzz still around SW19 after an epic encounter between Rafael Nadal and Nick Kyrgios that fired the tournament into life on Thursday.

We go from Nadal to Novak on Friday with the world number one looking to book his spot in the second week of the third Grand Slam of the season. It isn’t all about him though. The support card is pretty decent and includes a couple of Brits in action too.

Day 4 Recap

It was a classic confrontation between Nadal and Kyrgios which had everything a sporting contest should have in it. That was the undoubted highlight of the day, a day where Roger Federer cruised through in straight sets but Serena Williams was taken to a decider. She did come through though unlike Angelique Kerber while elsewhere in the tournament Jo Konta made it through safely enough. Kei Nishikori was another straight sets winner on the day with Dan Evans and Harriet Dart providing the British success.

It was a poor day betting wise for us. Steve Johnson rescued it with a five set win over Alex De Minaur but that was as good as it got despite Kyrgios threatening a win over Nadal at one stage. Carla Suarez Navarro won but not by enough to cover the handicap while Millman was far too good for Djere so the day was largely a write off and gives us some work to do on Friday.

Centre Court

It is the beaten finalist from last year, Kevin Anderson, who has the chance to step foot back on Centre Court for the first time since then when he opens up the show against the unheralded Argentine player Guido Pella. The next match on the main court sees the pick of the women’s matches in the third round as Simona Halep takes on Viktoria Azarenka in what should be a belter. The new superstar in waiting Coco Gauff rounds off the day. After seeing off Venus Williams and Magdalena Rybarikova in the first two rounds the young American goes up against Polona Hercog, who is appearing in the third round for just the second time in her career.

Court 1

The women start things off over on Court 1 on Friday when the player many believe is the favourite to win this title after her success at Eastbourne, Karolina Pliskova, takes on Su-Wei Hsieh in what may be a real clash in styles. World number one and defending champion Novak Djokovic is up second on this court when he faces the classy youngster Hubert Hurkacz before another outstanding youngster rounds off the show as Felix Auger-Aliassime takes on Ugo Humbert for a place in the second week of the draw.

Court 2

Caroline Wozniacki is the first seed looking to avoid the curse of Court 2 on Friday. She plays Shuai Zhang in a match which could get tricky if the Dane allows it to be so. A good looking men’s match follows them when Karen Khachanov takes on Roberto Bautista Agut for a place in the fourth round and then the one remaining singles match on this court should be another good contest when the other top level Russian, Daniil Medvedev, goes up against David Goffin in a relatively even looking match up.

Court 3

There are only three matches on this court from the singles draws. The first of them sees the talented Elina Svitolina looking to move another step closer to a first Grand Slam title when she meets Maria Sakkari before Anett Kontaveit will look to continue her fine form in this tournament. She meets Karolina Muchova for a place in the fourth round. The last match on the court could go on for a while as Fernando Verdasco takes on the Italian player Thomas Fabbiano.

Best of the Rest

There are only four other singles matches dotted in among the many doubles games around the grounds on Friday but that doesn’t mean there are no big names on show. Milos Raonic is out on Court 12 while the seeded pair of Benoit Paire and Petra Martic make up a good looking card over on Court 18. When the action is concluded on the show courts Andy Murray and Serena Williams will begin their mixed doubles partnership.

Men’s Betting

I’ll go with a couple in the men’s draw on Friday with the first coming on Centre Court where I like Kevin Anderson and Guido Pella to serve up something of a lengthy contest. Anderson has looked alright so far on his return from injury but he dropped a set to Janko Tipsarevic in the previous round and Pella has the serving power to keep the South African honest here. I would expect Anderson to have the class to come through, assuming he has the fitness after such a lengthy layoff but perhaps not before he has competed in a fourth set. I like over 3.5 sets here.

David Goffin has looked in pretty decent nick on the grass this year. He made the final in Halle, seeing off Alexander Zverev and the form horse Matteo Berrettini along the way and would have gone further in Holland had he not lost a third set to eventual champion Adrian Mannarino. Already here he has seen off the competent Jeremy Chardy in straight sets and I like the Belgian against the Russian player Daniil Medvedev. We saw when Medvedev lost to Gilles Simon in the Queens semi-final that he can be a little one-paced or one-dimensional and the consistency of Goffin can get to him. It doesn’t take much to blow the fuse of Medvedev it has to be said and I think Goffin’s class can light the touch paper and guide the Belgian through.

Women’s Betting

I’ll take a couple in the women’s draw as well where I expect Danielle Collins to give Petra Martic more than she can handle. The Croatian will battle hard but we often see when she comes up against clean hitters she can be found wanting if they don’t give her errors and there is enough to suggest that the way Collins is hitting the ball she will keep it in play enough to come through here. The first week of Wimbledon has been all about the new generation of American players but Collins’ name hasn’t really been attached to that. She can make sure it is with a win here.

Speaking of the next generation my other bet in the women’s draw is for Coco Gauff to cover a 2.5 game handicap against Polona Hercog. To give the Slovenian credit she did well to come through against Madison Keys in the previous round but you only had to look at the reaction of Keys after the match to know that she didn’t turn up. She hit a crazy 32 unforced errors in just 18 games which is a stupid number. Gauff isn’t going to do that the way she is hitting the tennis ball right now so I fancy the girl labelled the next superstar to have no problem in seeing off Hercog and covering a 2.5 game handicap in the process.
