World Grand Prix Darts 2022 – Semi-Finals Tips and Betting Preview

The two semi-finals of the World Grand Prix will be played out on what looks like being a wonderful night of darts inside the Morningside Arena on Saturday as four top class acts play for a spot in the final on Sunday.

We go up to the best of seven sets for these semi-finals which should see the quality continue to improve, not least because the top three players in the world have all made it through to this penultimate stage of the event.

Gerwyn Price vs Nathan Aspinall

The opening semi-final of the tournament sees the 2020 champion Gerwyn Price looking to make it through to the final for the third year in succession. Standing in his way is a Nathan Aspinall who is having a very good 2022 after the injury woes that dogged him last year.

At one stage Aspinall feared for his career such were the problems with his throwing arm but he has got the issue sorted out and looks back to the player who reached the final of the Premier League a couple of years ago. This will be the first time he has appeared in the semi-final of this tournament and he knows a win here unlocks the door to the Grand Slam of Darts so this is a big match for the Englishman. It is similar for Price in terms of the race for the world number one spot. Price has to win here to maintain that position in the rankings but he’ll have his eye on the title from here on in and after the last five sets he has played in the tournament he will have every right to be eyeing that up.

Aspinall has something about him this week and he often gives it to Price with their personalities combining to fire each other up. I still think that added composure of Price at this stage of a major event will get him over the line but in terms of a bet I prefer to back Aspinall to hit more than 5.5 180s. He usually delivers his best against Price and often peppers the 60 against him. I fancy this to go six sets at least and if it does we need Aspinall to continue to average one 180 a set which he has done in his last two matches. If it only goes five we just need one per set and one on top. I expect Aspinall to perform well win or lose and he can cover this total.

Peter Wright vs Michael van Gerwen

The second semi-final of the tournament sees two of the best in the world battling it out for a spot in another major final when the world champion Peter Wright takes on the player who has won this five times and is looking for a sixth title on Sunday in Michael van Gerwen.

If you was basing the outcome of this match on how the two performed on Friday then you would have MVG as a certainty as even with the double start format he still averaged the better part of a ton but we know in sport that it can sometimes be hard to back up a positive display like that with another. That will give Wright encouragement as he has been battling with his best form all week. There have been bits of his best stuff but not over a whole match. Wright will know if he can find his better form and sustain it then he is more than capable of winning this one but it is hard to go against a player who has won this title five times and who is starting to look very imperious in the format once again.
