The first round of the World Grand Prix concludes inside the Morningside Arena in Leicester on Tuesday evening when the players in the bottom half of the draw enter the quirky tournament looking for a spot in the second round.
We saw one or two big name casualties on Monday and the seeded players and the favourites will know that this format is ripe for shocks and they will be doing all they can to avoid being the latest of them.
First Four Matches
As was the case on Monday, the opening four matches are the ones which do not involve the seeded players so that means that we have the former winner of The Masters in Joe Cullen opening up the show against the bright star Mike De Decker before the form man of the moment, Dave Chisnall, takes to the Grand Prix stage to meet Luke Woodhouse. The third match of this session will see Damon Heta looking to make progress at the expense of Ryan Searle. Two tournament winners meet to take us into the halfway point when Dimitri Van den Bergh faces Chris Dobey.

Later Four Matches
The second half of the evening session will see the four matches which have seeded players in them taking place and the first seed to step onto the big stage is Peter Wright. He will look to make it into the second round at the expense of Gabriel Clemens before the firecracker match of the entire first round takes place as Michael van Gerwen begins his title defence against the tough competitor that is Josh Rock. Former winner Jonny Clayton will look to come through in the penultimate match of the evening. The current European champion Ross Smith is his opponent. Luke Humphries rounds off the show when he faces Daryl Gurney.
Betting
Much like on Monday, there isn’t a huge amount that I like the look of over the course of Tuesday’s action but the one I will go with is Gabriel Clemens to beat Peter Wright. Wright has begun to offer up a few more results in recent times but there doesn’t look to be anything convincing about it and I still think he is vulnerable, especially over a match of this distance where it only needs 15 minutes of inspired darts from the German and he could be away and gone.
Clemens probably hasn’t had the 2023 that he would have wanted since he went to the semi-final of the World Championship but he has lost some narrow matches and has a chance to show that the run at Ally Pally was no fluke. Clemens saw his fellow German player Martin Schindler win on the opening night of the tournament which should inspire him a touch and I definitely think he is a much better underdog than a favourite. Given the struggles of Wright I have this as a 50:50 match so the 5/4 on Clemens to win is a touch of value.
