World Grand Prix Snooker 2020 – Day 1 Tips and Betting Preview

The first night of the World Grand Prix sees four matches taking place as eight men get their final tournament of 2020 underway inside the behind closed doors setup in the Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes on Monday, on what should be a good evening of snooker.

Sometimes in these big tournaments we have to wait for the big names to come out to play, especially when one event backs on to another, but there are a couple of stars on show and a pretty decent support cast.

Main Table

The defending champion Neil Robertson has been assigned the task and honour of getting the tournament underway on the main table. The UK Championship winner goes up against a man who famously took him out of the World Championship a couple of years ago in the experienced Robert Milkins. Speaking of experience, once those two are done John Higgins will be up on the main table. He takes on the Chinese player Xiao Guodong who has a decent enough record in these ITV tournaments and who shouldn’t be dismissed.

Table Two

Although the focus of the televised action is going to be on the main table on Monday evening, there is a decent little card over on the second table and it begins with two men who seven years ago were competing in the semi-final of the World Championship as Barry Hawkins takes on Ricky Walden. After those two are done two players on the fringes of the top 16 who just missed out on The Masters will go up against each other when Joe Perry takes on the World Championship semi-finalist of earlier in the year in Anthony McGill.

Betting

I’ll start the week with the one bet which comes over on the second table when Joe Perry meets Anthony McGill in the second of the two matches out there. It is the Scot I like in the match as well. I say that because had it not been for the UK Championship run to the quarter finals Perry has had such an ordinary season that he wouldn’t even be in this tournament. While that run to the last eight in the UK was welcome, he didn’t beat anyone in the top 50 in that tournament so all he did was take advantage of the draw opening up.

McGill made it to the last 16 of that tournament and looked to have Neil Robertson where he wanted him before letting him off the hook but earlier in the season the Scot was in decent form when he made the last 16 of the European Masters, not long after his run to the last four in Sheffield. McGill seems to have adjusted to the behind closed doors nature of the tour much better than Perry has and I fancy him to come through here.
