The second set of matches in the Africa Cup of Nations concludes on Saturday when Group D play their middle games and after the opening results it is a big day for a few sides as they look to get into a position to qualify for the knockout stages.
Ghana vs Mali
The first match sees a Ghana side who know a win will move them into the quarter finals at the first time of asking taking on Mali who will be in a good position to make it through themselves should they find a win here.
Ghana laboured to a win over Uganda in their opening match and they will need to improve on that against this physical Mali side if they are to get the victory. Mali were held by Egypt but they put up a good showing which will encourage them.
Neither side impressed me massively defensively in their first game and I’ve a feeling this one could be a little more open than we saw in those earlier matches too. Both have goals in them so I like the look of both teams to score in this game.
Egypt vs Uganda
This game is pretty much must win for Egypt if they are to make it into the quarter final while Uganda know a defeat in this one will know them out so there is plenty at stake here.
Egypt weren’t convincing in their first match as the pitch and a strong Mali side frustrated them but they have had a few days to take that in and work out a game plan that deals with the pitch. Uganda put up a fair showing against Ghana in defeat and if they have enough left in the tank I’m sure they will perform with spirit here too.
Whether they have much in the tank remains to be seen though. We’ve seen the other group minnows struggle in their second match this week and you’ve got to think on an energy zapping surface Uganda could be the same.
With that in mind I like Egypt to win to nil here. Since the beginning of 2016 Egypt have won seven matches and six of them were without conceding. Uganda have failed to score in six of their last eight matches and lost all but one of them so the value lies in Egypt winning to nil.
