We have another big day of action in the BDO World Darts Championship on Thursday as the second round of the men’s tournament draws to a close. It is also the quarter final day in the women’s event and we also crown the youth champion at the Lakeside Country Club.
Wednesday was a hugely dramatic day with two of the last four finalists of the men’s competition exiting the tournament while the world number one Glen Durrant had to perform a Houdini act. Hopefully we’re in for more of the same here.
Afternoon Session
The day begins with the World Youth final which is between Scotland’s Nathan Girvan and Justin van Tergouw of the Netherlands. The opening women’s quarter final follows them as Lisa Ashton takes on Fallon Sherrock in the pick of the round. Scott Waites continues his title defence against Mark McGeeney before Trina Gulliver looks for another win on the Lakeside stage when she faces Aileen de Graaf.
Evening Session
The evening gets underway with a ladies match between the two surprise packages of the event in Casey Gallagher and Corinne Hammond. Darius Labanauskas then faces Krzysztof Ratajski for the right to face Glen Durrant in the quarter final before Anastasia Dobromyslova takes on her pairs partner Lorraine Winstanley for a spot in the semi-final. The day rounds off with the all-Dutch battle between Richard Veenstra and Danny Noppert.
Betting
I had a feeling carnage could ensue on Wednesday and with the exit of Scott Mitchell and the near exit of Glen Durrant it certainly did and there is the potential for a repeat of that on Thursday. The carnage may well occur in the women’s draw but there is something telling me not all four favourites will win.
Casey Gallagher looks to be the most vulnerable to me. Clearly if she repeats her performance from her win over Deta Hedman then she’ll be fine here but that was a huge win and now she is in the position of being expected to win a match on the Lakeside stage and probably expecting to win herself. That is a very different proposition entirely.
Corinne Hammond knows the score. She knows a solid game from here will give her every chance and given the new pressure on Gallagher I fancy the Australian might just have her number.
In the men’s draw there is one bet I like and that is on the Lithuanian player Darius Labanauskas. Full credit to Krzysztof Ratajski for getting this far but I don’t see a real weakness in Labanauskas’ game for him to exploit. Labanauskas scores well and he finishes arguably even better and I expect him to come through with a fair bit in hand against the Polish player.
