It is the final day of group matches in the Confederations Cup on Sunday as Group B reaches a conclusion. Two sides are heavily weighted in their attempts to make it to the semi-finals but technically all four sides can qualify which should mean Chile against Australia is a competitive game.
Chile only need a draw to go through but if they want to top the group and dodge Portugal in the last four they need to win and protect their goal difference advantage on Germany. Australia need to win and win big to progress.
Chile
I would imagine Chile will be frustrated that they haven’t already secured their spot in the semi-finals because they dominated Germany in the first half of their match but could only find the net once and ended up paying the price for that. They look champagne going forward but at the back they resemble cheap budget coca-cola.
I always thought that defence would come unstuck and cost them at some point in the tournament and it did just that against Germany in the previous game. That should put an emphasis on them being more ruthless at the other end but it can work the other way where they feel the pressure to score and snatch at everything.
Australia
If there is one side in the tournament who I haven’t been surprised by it is Australia. I must admit I followed a couple of their warm up matches to get a feel for how they play and they are a very open side which makes them good to watch but I would imagine they will be tough to support especially in big competitions.
As neutrals though we can sit back and enjoy them. They are very similar to Chile in that their attack is very much their strength and their defence is far too weak for this level and if they are going to qualify from this position they are going to need to take risks and rely on their defence to come up with the goods.
Team News
Alexis Sanchez was back for the Germany game and appears fine to play in this one. Gary Medel went off injured in that game but has been passed fit for this one as has Claudio Bravo who missed the first two games with injury.
Australia haven’t started Tim Cahill in this tournament yet but the time for him starting might have come even if he can only go for an hour.

Betting
I don’t think I will be surprising anyone with my bet in this match. It is on over 3 goals which I see as a very nice line. Australia have to go after goals but Chile don’t need no invitation to get involved in an end to end classic. I remember a remarkable match between them and Mexico in the Copa American two years ago which people thought would be tight and it exploded into a 3-3 draw.
This can’t be tight because neither of them can defend. Chances will come regularly and it all depends on how clinical the two sides are as to whether we get more than three goals. At this stage of the tournament I expect the forwards to be warmed up enough to keep the goals flowing.
I’m also going to chance my arm with a particular favourite of mine to score at some point. Mauricio Isla bombs forward more than any right back I know for this lot and if there is one thing I’ve noticed it is that Australia are defensively pathetic down their left hand side. I expect Isla to get on the gallop down the right flank regularly here. He can be guilty of passing in good positions but at 9/1 I’ll take the chance he shoots and scores.
