The Confederations Cup begins at the weekend which gives us just enough time to go through the top goalscorer market which is always a popular one heading into any international tournament.
This market is led by Cristiano Ronaldo as you would expect but there are some decent strikers on show who could provide some value to the Real Madrid and Portugal star.

Market Leaders
Cristiano Ronaldo is a best price of 15/8 to lead the scoring in the tournament but those jumping in to back him must remember he’s had a tough season and didn’t score that many in Euro 2016 so although he is a worthy favourite there are reasons to avoid him should you want to.
Alexis Sanchez is the 6/1 second favourite and if he is unhappy at Arsenal and wants to convince the big clubs to come and sign him then this is the perfect platform to perform on. Chile are one of the fancied sides in the tournament so it makes sense that he is up in the betting in this market.
Timo Werner is likely to lead the German line in the absence of some bigger names of the past and he is 10/1 to top score in this competition. Germany are resting some players though so changes might not come as routinely as they usually would which might be a concern.
Andre Silva and Sandro Wagner are both 12/1 to top score. You would look at the Portugal and Germany squads and say these two are the second string forwards in them but they wouldn’t be the first and probably not the last to top score ahead of more established stars should they manage it. It is 16/1 bar.
Profile
This top scorer market is slightly different to some others. I say that because half of the sides in the tournament are going to go through to the knockout stages and with a third place play-off in this competition too that means half of the field are going to have two more matches than the rest but there is no advantage in terms of game time for making the final.
With that in mind narrowing down the field is fairly simple. We are looking for strikers or attacking players from a side who is likely to finish in the top two of their group to get the maximum five matches to get cracking in.

Betting
While I understand why there could be a surge for backing players in Group A where New Zealand could be perceived as the whipping boys I’m not going down that route. Ronaldo is a little short for me especially were Portugal to be through ahead of their last match and he gets rested for it which would negate the supposed New Zealand angle. I’m not wholly convinced that angle exists anyway.
Instead I’m going for a man who has served me well in the past and that is Eduardo Vargas. Vargas has four goals in World Cup qualifying for Chile and he was the top scorer in the Copa America Centenario last year where he took Mexico for four goals in the quarter final. Those two could meet in the semi-final here. The Tigres forward should go well and at 16/1 he’s decent top scorer value.
