The first round of the World Cup of Darts has finished and the 16 teams that remain will be delighted to have made it through the nerve jangling format of doubles and into the second round where the format begins to favour the better sides.
We now have singles and doubles involved in the second round matches, all of which are played across two sessions of action in Frankfurt on Saturday. Each match is the best of three ties with the first two ties being best of seven leg singles and if they are shared the match will be decided with a best of seven pairs match.
Afternoon Session
The afternoon action begins with many peoples idea of the dark horse in this tournament in Belgium taking on Greece before the battle of Wales and Republic of Ireland which could be particularly intriguing. Australia will look to have too much for a talented Russian side and then come Scotland conquerors Singapore who meet Spain for a place in the quarter finals.
Evening Session
Austria are given the honour of leading off the evening when they face the potentially tricky test of Canada before the host nation Germany are back in action against the story of the event in Brazil. England will then aim for a place in the last eight when they take on South Africa before the Netherlands and USA round off the evening.
Betting
Usually in this tournament I can spot an obvious outsider to back but the way the draw is this year you would have to fancy most of the favourites to get through. With that in mind I’m going in search of a favourite who could be vulnerable under pressure and that could be Germany.
We saw the relief in the faces of the Germans in the first round and now they are expected to beat Brazil where perhaps there weren’t expected to beat Northern Ireland. Martin Schlinder won’t need reminding that he has lost to Diogo Portela in a European Tour event this year and were that result to be repeated Max Hopp and the German pair would be under pressure in the other rubbers. Brazil are freerolling from here on in and at 4/1 they might not be done just yet.
