The last Premier League match before Christmas comes from Goodison Park on Sunday afternoon as Everton host Tottenham in a battle of two sides who will be looking to start an important festive period off with a bang.
Everton begin the match in the bottom half of the table but will move up significantly with a victory while Tottenham can close to within two points of Manchester City if they can win here and would have to be considered right in the title mix.
Everton
The Toffees are just going through a bit of a wobble at the minute. The disastrous end to the Merseyside derby looks to have left a bit of a hangover and they would really do with snapping out of that in this match. Since that agonising late loss to Liverpool they have snatched a draw against Watford and been beaten by Manchester City.
Everton are a much improved side going forward but you would like to see them convert more of the chances that they create to ease the pressure in the big matches. The chances are they won’t always create plenty against the bigger teams so being ruthless in both boxes is a trait they need to adopt if they are to go to the next level.
Tottenham Hotspur
It has been a good couple of weeks for Mauricio Pochettino and his Tottenham side. It began with a qualification in the Champions League when they got a result in Barcelona and in midweek they overcame rivals Arsenal to make it into the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup and if they can win here and propel themselves into Premier League reckoning it would set up the second half of their season very nicely.
Spurs are really finding their straps in attacking areas at the present time and to be fair to them they are not relying on Harry Kane all the time either. Plenty of men are contributing to goals although the narrow margin of victory over Burnley last weekend could have been a cause for concern. They are generally tight at the back and are looking pretty good right now.
Team News
Everton could have Idrissa Gueye back in their starting XI if he comes through a fitness test having recovered from a groin issue. Concerns over whether Richarlison and Andre Gomes would be available have been unfounded.
Tottenham rested Harry Kane for an hour in midweek citing that he had been ill but he is expected to start this one. Eric Dier an Jan Vertonghen remain among the players who remain out injured for Spurs.

Betting
If you pushed me I think Tottenham will win this match but I don’t think I would be massive surprised if they don’t. Everton generally play up to the better sides well on their own patch and I wouldn’t be shocked if that happens here as well but ultimately I’m expecting Spurs to win the game.
They are favourites to do that though and I’m not sewn on them enough to take a handicap with them in it and I don’t really fancy the price on Everton much either so with stacks more football to come over the coming week or so I’ll sit this one out.
