2018-19 Premier League – Newcastle vs Wolves Betting Preview

The Premier League weekend continues with the Super Sunday offering which this week provides one match after what was a busy and entertaining Saturday in the top flight. Newcastle United host  Wolverhampton Wanderers at St James’ Park.

Newcastle will be looking to get back to winning ways after two games without one while Wolves will be hoping to build on their fine win over Chelsea in midweek as they look to get back to the form of earlier in the campaign.

Newcastle United

The Magpies got off to a wretched start to this term but looked to be coming good when they won three straight matches either side of the last international break. They have dropped off again though having not won either of their last two matches and so they will be eager to win here to avoid a drop in form becoming another slump, especially with Christmas on the horizon.

Newcastle begin the match just three points above the relegation zone and if they are going to survive comfortably this season they will need to continue to pick up results at home so this is a pretty big match as far as they are concerned. A win here will move them up a place in the table which should offer a decent incentive.

Wolverhampton Wanderers

The expectation on Wolves heading into the season was huge and for the first two months of it they were fully living up to that but things went a bit quiet for them throughout November and now they are looking to get back to the standards they reached early on in the campaign. January is approaching and you would think they would spend again so if they can find a few wins prior to that they can chase a lofty spot in 2019.

The issue I’ve had with Wolves throughout the campaign is their struggles to score goals. I highlighted it ahead of their match with Cardiff last weekend and they duly failed to score from open play and were beaten as a result. They have some brilliant play in the lead up to the penalty box so if they can find a genuine out and out goal threat they won’t be sitting in the bottom half for very long.

Team News

Kenedy and Paul Dummett are being given every chance to prove they are fit to play in this match while Matt Ritchie returns from suspension. Fabian Schar is out having picked up five bookings so Rafael Benitez will be forced into one change.

Wolves have talismanic midfielder Ruben Neves back from his own ban for this match. Leander Dendoncker finally made his debut in midweek and he will be looking to build on that. Jonny remains out injured.

Betting

When I was assessing the weekend matches I found this one as one of the toughest to call. We have two sides who struggle to find the net so the obvious pick is to back under 2.5 goals but we would have to take a very skinny price and run the risk of this being like Wolves’ match against Cardiff recently where a wonder strike skews our chances.

I don’t really see either side as a massive favourite in the match so I guess with that it would have a fair bit of draw potential but I don’t like to approach a match from that standpoint so having had a couple of winners in the division on Saturday and with another match to come this weekend I’m happy enough to sit this one out.
