The last 16 of the Australian Open gets underway on Sunday with both the men’s and women’s draws under the microscope. At the end of the day we will know the quarter final line up in half of each singles draw.
Super Saturday really lived up to expectation although if you are Alexander Zverev or Maria Sharapova you might disagree. We saw one of the matches of Grand Slam history between Simona Halep and Lauren Davis which the world number one eventually won 15-13. Elsewhere there were comfortable wins for Roger Federer, Karolina Pliskova and Madison Keys.
Rod Laver Arena
There are just eight singles matches on show on Sunday and five of them come on the Rod Laver Arena in the day and night sessions. The first one sees Anett Kontaveit taking on Carla Suarez Navarro before Magdalena Rybarikova goes up against Caroline Wozniacki. The day session concludes with Rafael Nadal facing Diego Schwartzman.
There are a couple of juicy offerings in the night session for us to enjoy. It gets underway with the big men’s match of the round when Nick Kyrgios faces Grigor Dimitrov and then Elina Svitolina will round off the day on the main court when she takes on Denise Allertova.
Margaret Court Arena
Mixed in with the doubles action on the second court are a couple of singles matches. Pablo Carreno Busta goes up against Marin Cilic in the first of those and then two surprise packages meet in the women’s draw when Petra Martic takes on Elise Mertens for a place in the last eight.
Hisense Arena
It is mostly doubles on the Hisense Arena but there is one singles match and it is the one which all British eyes will be on as Kyle Edmund looks for a place in his first Grand Slam quarter final when he takes on the veteran Italian player Andreas Seppi for the right to face eight Dimitrov or Kyrgios in the last eight.

Betting
I’m only going with one bet on Sunday and it comes in the big match in the men’s draw in the night session as Nick Kyrgios takes on Grigor Dimitrov and I’m expecting something of a marathon match between two of the best around right now. These two met in the semi-final in Brisbane earlier in the year when Kyrgios prevailed but they went the distance in that match and I fancy this one could go that far too.
Even if it doesn’t I expect it to go at least four sets and with a couple of tiebreaks likely to be mixed in like the first time they battled it out at Indian Wells whether it is four sets or five I expect to see more than 40.5 games.
