After an entertaining but elongated midweek round of matches in the Premier League, we begin the weekend with a truncated card of fixtures on Saturday, where just five top flight battles take place over the course of the day.
There might not be many matches but there are still five of the big six in action over the three kick off times we have become accustomed to by now, so there shouldn’t be a shortage of quality over the piece that is for sure.
Early Kick Off
We begin at Goodison Park where Everton begin life without Marco Silva when they go up against a Chelsea side who are outperforming expectations so far this season. These two had very different results in midweek, with the Toffees going down to rivals Liverpool while Chelsea overcame the threat of Aston Villa so the visitors could well be perceived as the favourites, although Duncan Ferguson is sure to have Everton bang up for this one.
3pm Matches
Such is the shortage of matches on Saturday that we only have three games in the traditional 3pm kick off slot. One of those sees the runaway leaders Liverpool in action when they make the lengthy trip down to Bournemouth to face Eddie Howe’s men. Tottenham are also on show in the normal kick off time. They welcome Burnley to London with the other match sees the bottom club Watford host Crystal Palace in what might be the tightest match of the afternoon.
Late Game
As we so often do this season, we save the best for last with the final match of a shortened day in the Premier League seeing the two Manchester clubs going at it for plenty of marbles. Manchester City can’t afford to drop any more points in the chase to catch Liverpool but Manchester United would love to get one over their rivals, and if they do that then it would showcase the potential they have and the improvements that they have made. Both these sides might not be challenging at the top these days but this is a big version of the derby nevertheless.
Betting
It is that Manchester derby where my only bet on the day comes as I like goals to flow in it. There is no option for Manchester City but to win this game, and in truth they will probably be looked down upon if they don’t win it comfortably as well. In order to win it they need to go on the attack because their defence does not look reliable at all right now.
Manchester United almost have a free hit here and we saw in midweek that they can trouble the better sides. In fact, we’ve seen it all season. They are the only team to have taken points off Liverpool this term heading into the weekend and they also thrashed Chelsea and have beaten Tottenham this season too. I wouldn’t be surprised if United offer some good things here. I still expect City to win so that should see us go way beyond three goals to round off the day.
