All but one of another round of fixtures in the Sky Bet Championship take place on Saturday afternoon, a day where passions and tensions could run high looking at a couple of matches that are on the card.
We have a televised match to kick us off at lunchtime, where there is no love lost between the two sides on show, and then a very competitive looking set of fixtures to occupy the remainder of the afternoon.
Saturday’s fixtures are as follows: (3pm unless stated)
Leeds United v Derby County (12.30pm)
Birmingham City v Preston North End
Brentford v Stoke City
Bristol City v Swansea City
Cardiff City v Middlesbrough
Luton Town v Hull City
Millwall v Queens Park Rangers
Nottingham Forest v Barnsley
Reading v Blackburn Rovers
Sheffield Wednesday v Fulham
Wigan Athletic v Charlton Athletic
Big Matches
The TV offering on Saturday afternoon is a repeat of that amazing play-off semi-final from last season which was fuelled by ‘Spygate’ as Leeds United host Derby County in what should be a great way to kick off a sizzling day both in terms of action and weather as the home side look to remain top of the pile. The other big match of the afternoon comes from Ashton Gate where fourth placed Bristol City host second placed Swansea City in what should be another entertaining contest given the styles of both sides.
Best of the Rest
Charlton Athletic will look to continue their excellent start to the campaign with a trip to Wigan Athletic while two promotion chasers meet when Sheffield Wednesday and Fulham go at it up at Hillsborough. There is a London derby between Millwall and QPR while Stoke City go in search of their first win of the campaign when they make the trip to London to take on Brentford. Two sides in the top eight battle it out in the midlands where Birmingham City take on Preston North End in another decent enough looking affair.
Betting
I’ll play two bets over the course of Saturday and it will come to no surprise to regular readers that the first of them is on over 3 goals in the match between Luton Town and Hull City. I’ve mentioned for much of the season how Luton are going for sides and not massively interested in clean sheets and their manager confirmed that ahead of this game. Hull have a lot of goals in their side in Grosicki, Bowen and even Eaves who caused Luton problems last season but we’ve seen already that the Hatters have no trouble finding the back of the net. I’m expecting an open game as every other game Luton have had against Grant McCann recently has been and as such I’m expecting more than three goals.
Nottingham Forest have made a solid start to the season, if a little unspectacular in terms of a few draws but they have only lost once and that came on the first week of the campaign against West Brom and had their keeper not had a mare that day they probably wouldn’t have lost that. Barnsley have found the step up to the Championship pretty tough going and have only found the back of the net on one occasion in their last four matches and that was when they were 3-0 down. The signs are that Forest are getting better with each game and if all things are equal I would expect them to come through this one quite comfortably.
