2019 ATP Cincinnati: Western & Southern Open Tennis – Semi-Finals Tips and Betting Preview

We are down to the semi-final stage of the ATP Cincinnati Masters 1000 tournament, with both matches taking place on Saturday evening UK time as we find out who will compete in the Western & Southern Open final on Sunday.

It has been one of those crazy weeks whereby you would be a rich man if you had successfully predicted the identity of all four semi-finalists. There won’t be many who will have done that but either way it is a big opportunity for at least three men on Saturday.

Richard Gasquet vs David Goffin

The first of the two semi-finals sees the real surprise package of the week, Richard Gasquet, taking on the underrated seeded player David Goffin for a place in a rare Masters 1000 final for both the combatants.

Gasquet has defied all logic to make it through to the last four. If you had said to me that would be the case after he beat Andy Murray in the first round of the tournament I’d have said you were barking mad but here he is. Goffin is a slightly easier to find semi-finalist but the way he has played this week he is very fortunate to have made it this far. He was helped of course with a walkover in the previous round. Neither of these men have convinced me. If forced I would chance Gasquet at the prices but I’m happy to keep my powder dry for this one.

Novak Djokovic vs Daniil Medvedev

The second semi-final could be perceived as effectly the final as whoever wins the last four clash between Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev, that player will be a massive favourite to win the tournament on Sunday.

Djokovic is a warm favourite for this match and I have to say I think he wins here too. Medvedev is in a rich vein of form at the minute but the well is going to run dry for him eventually and although he has given Djokovic plenty of issues in their two meetings this year, I just feel that much like in his quarter final, the longer the game goes on the further clear Djokovic will pull.

You would have to think Medvedev is going to need to serve lights out to win this match but he’s up against the best returner in the game right now so that shot is always going to be under pressure. We saw Medvedev struggle in similar circumstances against Nadal last week and the same can happen here. I think Djokovic will cover 3.5 games here.
