There are four matches on the second day of action in the Players Championship, as the middle of the three Coral Snooker Series events continues with two sessions of snooker inside the Guild Hall in Preston on Tuesday.
Two favourites made it through on Monday night, and on Tuesday eight star players will look to join them on what looks like being an exciting day of snooker. World champion Mark Williams and The Masters winner Judd Trump headline the action.
Afternoon Session
Mark Williams vs Ali Carter
The opening match on the main TV table sees the world champion Mark Williams going up against the World Grand Prix finalist Ali Carter for a place in the quarter final where either Neil Robertson or Joe Perry will be waiting.
Williams has had a season to forget so far but there are still three big events for him to put that right, beginning here, and I sense he is up for the battle this week. Carter reached the final of the first of these Coral Series events and needs something similar if he is to make the last of them in Llandudno in two weeks.
I’m already on Williams here and given that neither man has been as consistent as we would like over the course of the campaign to date I think I’m just going to let that ride rather than chance anything out of the ordinary here.
Neil Robertson vs Joe Perry
The other match in the afternoon session sees two good friends doing battle when Neil Robertson goes up against Joe Perry in a clash which will see the winner take on the man who prevails on the other table in the quarter final.
This is the first time we will have seen Robertson since he won the Welsh Open, apart from a qualifying match for the China Open which he won 6-0. Perry made his way out to India last week but did not fare as well as he might have done and probably hasn’t been done many favours by the schedule here.
Even were everything equal here I would fancy Robertson to win because he is in good form and he is the better player of the two. Perry is just back from India and is right up against it here so I fancy Robertson to come through with a bit in hand.

Evening Session
Judd Trump vs Jimmy Robertson
The main match in the evening session sees The Masters and World Grand Prix champion Judd Trump taking on the man who won the European Masters earlier in the campaign in the form of Jimmy Robertson for a place in the quarter final.
Trump has been in amazing form over the last three months and he is without doubt a worthy favourite here, especially as Robertson was one of those who qualified for India last week, but a 3.5 frame handicap is probably a touch on the large side. That said I’m not sure I want to oppose Trump in this form so I’ll sit this match out.
Kyren Wilson vs Jack Lisowski
Two men who need to win to keep their hopes of making the final Coral Snooker Series event in their own hands meet on the other table in the evening session when Kyren Wilson takes on Jack Lisowski for a place in the quarter final.
Wilson has won three tournaments this season and will go in search of a fourth one this week and he is expected to come through this match and continue his fine run. Lisowski made a strong start to the campaign but it has slowed up a touch recently and he suffered a first round exit in India last week which might not be completely ideal.
Despite his loss last week, there have been signs of improvement in Lisowski recently. He played well in the Welsh Open eventually going down to John Higgins and he has won four of the last five meetings with Wilson. Although he has won three tournaments this year there is a touch of all or nothing about Wilson at the minute. I think the value lies in Lisowski here.
Tips
