2019 Royal London One Day Cup – Good Friday Matches Betting Preview

The second set of matches in this season’s Royal London One Day Cup takes place on Good Friday and with the weather set to be amazing we should be in for a cracking day of 50 over action with decent crowds expected around the country.

This is a quick fire competition so those who played and lost on Wednesday will be eager to win and those who won will be able to lay a decent platform down with another here. We have a televised match which is certainly no bad thing and the counties that provide live streams are doing so again so there is a lot to enjoy over the course of the day.

North Group

Northamptonshire came a cropper up at Durham on Wednesday so they will be eager to pick up their first win against a Derbyshire who kick off their white ball season here. Durham will go in search of a second win in a row when they entertain a Leicestershire side who are looking to bounce back from a humbling at Yorkshire. The match of the afternoon in the North Group sees Nottinghamshire hosting Lancashire at Trent Bridge with both sides looking for their first win in the competition. Former winners Warwickshire host a potentially rampant Yorkshire side in the other match.

South Group

Middlesex get their quest for one day glory underway when they make the trip to Chelmsford to take on an Essex side who are looking for back-to-back victories to start their campaign. Hampshire began their title defence in style on Wednesday and should be capable of building on that against Glamorgan at the Ageas Bowl while Somerset open their one day season against Kent. The televised match is the later one to begin which sees Sussex taking on Surrey at Hove.

Non-TV Betting

I’ll go with three bets over the course of the day as well as a top batsman. My first bet is on Somerset to beat Kent. I’ve seen a few places describe Kent as well-balanced and a good side but until Joe Denly and Sam Billings come back I don’t see that at all and even then their bowling looks wafer thin to me. Somerset may not have reached the finals of this competition recently but they have been very consistent in it and I don’t see much area of weakness either. Their one day only cricketers like Peter Trego and Roelof van der Merve make them look stronger in depth although the way they have started the Championship they don’t really need that anyway. I can’t have this Kent attack and their batting runs out after Blake at five unless Stevens engages Reggie Biffington mode. Somerset for me.

Yorkshire demolished Leicestershire in their opening match in the competition on Wednesday and they head to Edgbaston to take on Warwickshire on Friday and I expect them to win that too. This is not the Warwickshire who won this competition a few years ago. While they have come extremely talented youngsters at their disposal, there is no Ian Bell and Jonathan Trott anymore and they were still their second and third highest run scorers in the tournament last season. Adam Hose is out for this match too while leading wicket taker from 2018, Olly Stone, isn’t anywhere to be seen either. Chris Woakes is available for the Bears but their batting looks light to me. Yorkshire piled up over 350 on Wednesday despite their top three not making double figures between them. There is so much more to come from this Yorkshire side and they look to have the beating of Warwickshire to me.

TV Bets

In the TV match I’m expecting a number of boundaries to be hit. You don’t have to do too much to access the boundaries at Hove and after their nightmare on Wednesday, I’m expecting the Surrey batsmen to come out with a backlash here. I’m not sure what happened to them at Bristol on Wednesday. At one stage Gloucestershire were 156/1 but then I suspect the pitch won as the next 19 wickets in the match fell for 167 runs. I don’t expect anything like that here. Sussex have dynamic batsmen in Salt, Wright, Evans and Rawlins and the entire top six of Surrey are either classy enough to find the boundaries or powerful enough to. The line here is 55.5 boundaries and I expect it to be covered. We saw on Wednesday that this is going to be a high scoring tournament. That can continue here

One man who I think is a big price in the top Surrey batsman market is Will Jacks. He made the headlines at the start of the season when he walloped a ton off 20 odd balls against Lancashire in a 10 over match and he has hit the ground running this term. He made a pair of 50s in the Championship match with Essex and was going as well as anyone against Gloucestershire on Wednesday when he hit his own wicket. He certainly looks like he belongs at this level though and is worth a point at 11/2 given that he is likely to bat at 3.
