There are two matches taking place in the Premier League on Wednesday evening with action impacting both ends of the table over the course of the night as the leading competition heads towards the halfway stage.
As with all the matches in the Premier League in recent times, both these games are live across two of the broadcasters of the competition, which feels like a good reason to sit back and enjoy an evening of top flight action.
Manchester City vs Brighton & Hove Albion (18.00 – BT Sport 1)
The opening match of the night is a battle between a side who have their sights firmly on winning the Premier League and one who will be aiming to ensure they stay in the division as Manchester City host Brighton and Hove Albion at the Etihad Stadium.
The early part of the campaign was a little indifferent for City but they look to be finding their straps nicely now and know that a win here would move them up to third, with a game in hand on the top two who meet on Sunday. Brighton are a nice team to watch and have a style that is pretty on the eye but for all their nice play they don’t win as many matches as maybe they should so you get the feeling they could be perfect opponents should City want to lay a bit of a marker down for the second part of the campaign here.
City have struggled for goals a little at times this term but importantly their midfielders are beginning to find their touch. Ilkay Gundogan and Phil Foden were on the scoresheet at Chelsea and Bernardo Silva bagged a brace against Birmingham at the weekend. That makes me think there will be goals in this game, especially as you can’t rule Brighton out of nicking one from a set play. I think the way to play this is to back Man City to win and over 3.5 goals, something the former champions covered on their own in both matches last term.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Fulham (20.15 – Amazon Prime Video)
The second match of the night is a London derby which should have taken place over Christmas when high flying Tottenham Hotspur host a Fulham side who despite going four unbeaten in the league begin the night in the relegation zone.
There might be a bit of spice around this match. Fulham have made it clear they are unhappy at the short notice they have had to fulfil the fixture after Spurs should have been taking on Aston Villa in this match, while Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho still hasn’t got over the fact this game was originally postponed at incredibly short notice so the early stages of this one will be interesting. There is a question mark over how strong Fulham are but their team in the cup at the weekend didn’t look too bad and if they are up to scratch then this is a side who have held Southampton and Liverpool recently.
Tottenham should win this match and they should probably win it handsomely but their win over Leeds in their last league game was their first in five and Marcelo Bielsa’s men were probably sitting ducks for them in that clash, so Spurs aren’t convincing all that much at the minute. There is enough doubt on either side to give this one a swerve.
