The second pool of players are back on the live streams in the Icons of Darts event brought to us by the Modus team on Thursday as they compete for their second day of three this week to keep us entertained as lockdown continues.
We’ve seen the standard raised significantly since the format was elevated at the start of the week and given the six men we have on show on Thursday we should not expect that to change over the course of the day.
The Format
Each day from Monday to Saturday six players will battle it out for a daily title. There are two pools of players, one which plays on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and the other which toe the oche on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Each day the six players will play each other once over the best of nine legs with two points for a win. The daily winner is the player with the most points. If players are level on points it is determined on leg difference and then the record between the two. The entire event can be watched on various bookmaker websites, dartshop.tv or the Modus YouTube channel.

Wednesday Recap
We saw perfection in a couple of ways on Wednesday afternoon on what was an excellent day of darts. It first came from Martin Adams who nailed a 9 dart finish to win his match against James Hubbard while perfection was achieved over the course of the day by David Evans, who won all five matches that he played to come away with the group win. Adams finished with four wins from his five matches while Scott Marsh came away with three victories. Paul Nicholson won twice and there was a single win for Fallon Sherrock. For the second day this week James Hubbard went away without a win to show for his efforts.
It was a third winning day for us this week as one of Scott Marsh’s wins came early in the day against Fallon Sherrock as we predicted. He won that match 5-1 with a barrage of decent scoring and good enough finishing. Unfortunately the big two in the group proved too much for him over the course of the day so our small bet on Marsh topping the group again went by the wayside, but we are steadily building the profit this week.
Thursday Line Up
The second pool of players are back on Thursday and we have some great players on show here. Jason Askew was the man who walked off with the group win on Tuesday and he is back looking to defend his title. Scott Mitchell ran him closest over the first day of action this week and the former world champion will be looking to go one better on Thursday. The favourite with most firms going into the day is Boris Koltsov.
The other three players all need to find some improvement, although not so much of it is needed in the case of Mark Webster. He won the group on Saturday and went into the final game on Tuesday with a chance to land that section as well. Andy Jenkins is no stranger to competing for group titles so I expect to see more from him here. Keelan Kay is the other player on show. He’ll definitely need an improvement but he did win a couple of matches on Tuesday.

Outright Betting
I thought Jason Askew was the standout player in this pool of players going into the week and he justified that thought process on Tuesday when he landed top spot. I think there might be a little more to come from him too with the confidence of winning added to his ability. Scott Mitchell is the man I rate as the main danger to Askew but if I was going to back the former world champion I would have wanted a bit more than 4/1 as there always seems to be a sluggish performance in him at the minute. Mitchell scored better than anyone on Tuesday but still couldn’t come out on top.
Boris Koltsov, Andy Jenkins and Mark Webster all merit respect but I think Askew has the best all-round package of this lot. He only hit six 180s on Tuesday but we know he has a lot more in him than that. It is his finishing where I think he has the edge over the rest though and although he has been shortened into a best price of 9/4 I still think there is enough juice in that price to merit a bet on him landing the group for the second day in succession.
Match Betting
I’ll go with a couple in the match betting on Thursday with the first one coming in the battle of the world champions as Scott Mitchell takes on Mark Webster. Mitchell won their meeting on Tuesday 5-1 with a 106.34 average and generally gets the better of the left hander throughout their showings. Mitchell looked in great nick on Tuesday hitting no fewer than 12 180s and going about his business very well. If he can tidy everything up he has an excellent chance pushing Askew all the way in the group once again. On the way he can win this one no worse than 5-3.
The other bet I like is for Jason Askew to cover a 1.5 leg handicap against Andy Jenkins. He won 5-2 on Tuesday and has more than an edge over Jenkins in these Modus leagues. That was the eleventh time they have met in all and Askew has won 10 of the 11 matches. Five of those battles has been over this distance with Askew winning the lot, by scores of 5-1, 5-3, 5-0, 5-3 and 5-2. He is the cleaner and more consistent scorer of the two and probably edges it in the finishing front too. I think this format suits Askew to a tee and I’ll back him to continue that run of comfortable wins over Jenkins in races to five.
