2020 US Open Tennis – Day 1 Tips and Betting Preview

The opening day of the US Open takes place at the Billie Jean National Tennis Centre at Flushing Meadows on Monday and while the crowds and the excited buzz will be absent in New York, the anticipation and intensity isn’t lacking.

We have a great card to get the tournament into life too. Both number one seeds are on show across the two sessions on Ashe and the support cast includes a host of former winners and potential champions in two open draws.

Arthur Ashe Stadium

The day sessions remain a two match period of play and the tournament will get underway with the number one seed in the women’s draw Karolina Pliskova on show when the Czech ace goes up against Anhelina Kalinina in a match the former finalist should win. We then have the tie of the round on the men’s side of the draw when Alexander Zverev begins his campaign against the former finalist of this tournament in the very competent Kevin Anderson.

The night session shouldn’t lack for quality either and it is fired into life with the number one seed on the men’s side of the competition on show as Novak Djokovic starts out his quest for yet another Grand Slam title in this amazing career. He faces Damir Dzumhur for a place in the second round. The action on Ashe concludes with an all-Japanese contest when the 2018 champion Naomi Osaka goes up against her compatriot Misaki Doi.

Louis Armstrong Stadium

Another former champion opens up a busier than usual schedule on the Louis Armstrong court to make up for the fact the Grandstand isn’t in use this year. That is Angelique Kerber and she faces Alja Tomljanovic. The exciting Denis Shapovalov is next up on this court. He takes on the American youngster Sebastian Korda before arguably the tie of the women’s draw which sees Coco Gauff taking on the 31 seed Anastasija Sevastova. Two Americans then battle it out under the lights when John Isner meets his countryman Steve Johnson for a place in the second round before the action on Armstrong concludes with Alison Riske taking on Tatjana Maria.

Court 17

There is a busy schedule out on Court 17 as well and if there were fans in place this is a court that would see a decent crowd given the order of play. It begins with Kiki Mladenovic going up against Hailey Baptiste before Irina Begu meets the former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in a good looking contest. The men take centre stage after that as Stefanos Tsitsipas looks to justify his seeding of 4 when he meets Albert Ramos-Vinolas before the former Australian Open semi-finalist Danielle Collins faces Anett Kontaveit in the last of the three women’s matches on this court on the opening day. The last match on this court sees the American rising star Reilly Opelka taking on the seeded David Goffin.

Best of the Rest

There are plenty of seeds on show around the grounds so those watching on Prime Video or bookmaker streams have lots to enjoy. On Court 5 Diego Schwartzman, Taylor Fritz and Yulia Putintseva are on show while over on Court 11 there is Borna Coric, Pablo Carreno Busta, Petra Martic and Jennifer Brady among others. Court 12 might be another one to focus a stream on as Dusan Lajovic, Jack Sock and Filip Krajinovic are among the star names on show out on that part of the complex.

Men’s Betting

I’ll go with a couple of bets in the men’s draw on Monday with the first of them in that big match on Arthur Ashe as I like Kevin Anderson to go fairly well against Alexander Zverev. I’m not sure whether the South African will win the match but I certainly think he has it in him to force a decider at the very least. Zverev rarely gets things done the easy way in Grand Slams and the issue he has with his second serve is a major concern. That has been going on so long that it isn’t something that comes and goes. Anderson isn’t the player he was a couple of years ago after all his injuries but he’ll fight hard throughout and if that serve of Zverev breaks down again, Anderson is good enough to take enough chances to win a couple of sets.

The other bet I like is for Reilly Opelka to see off David Goffin over on Court 17. Opelka took some significant scalps with him in the Cincinnati event here last week before pulling out with a knee issue but there was an air of cautiousness about being fit for this event in his statement so I don’t see fitness being a problem. Opelka took care of Diego Schwartzman and Matteo Berrettini last week but perhaps more significantly Goffin lost to a big server in Jan-Lennard Struff. In fairness to the German his service speed isn’t in the same league as Opelka and so it might be no surprise that the American won their last meeting in Basel last year. He can come out on top in this one too.

Women’s Betting

It isn’t the easiest day to find bets in the women’s draw but there is one which takes my fancy which comes in the match between Madison Brengle and Lesia Tsurenko where I think the American is decent value at odds against. She might not have been winning many matches over the course of the year but she’s had some stinking draws as evidenced in Cincinnati last week when she drew Aryna Sabalenka in the first round. Although she lost she took that one the distance.

Tsurenko has been playing recently but she has been playing on the clay and with these New York courts being quick this week it might take the Ukrainian a while to get up to speed with everything. Although she lost the first round last week I do think the hit out on these courts will be a significant advantage for the American, who even with these tough draws she has been getting rarely loses easily. This is a much more comfortable draw and I expect her to take advantage.

Daily Accumulator

As always in the first few rounds of a Grand Slam we look to bump up the profits with a daily accumulator to offer something for those who like just one bet to occupy them while watching a day of action. We’ll go with a fourfold to start the week and we’ll bet with Boylesports where we will get a free accumulator once we have placed five of them.
