2020 US Open Tennis – Day 10 Tips and Betting Preview

The remaining quarter finals of the US Open take place inside the iconic Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York on Wednesday and by the end of the night session we will know the makeup of the semi-finals in both the singles draws.

We were treated to one absolutely cracking quarter final on Tuesday and with the bigger names settled in the order of play on Wednesday there is absolutely no reason to think we won’t get more of that over the course of the second day of last eight battles.

Day 9 Recap

The two women’s quarter finals were largely disappointing in terms of competitiveness on Tuesday. Jennifer Brady was far too good for Yulia Putintseva as was expected and then the same could be said of Naomi Osaka who overwhelmed Shelby Rogers. The men’s quarter finals were where the quality came from. Alexander Zverev saw off Borna Coric in four sets in a match which took a while to ignite but that wasn’t the case in the Pablo Carreno Busta and Denis Shapovalov clash which the Spaniard won in a gruelling five setter.

It was a good day for us betting wise with both our bets coming in and landing pretty early in each contest. We had over 38.5 games in both men’s matches and both were guaranteed to land at the end of the third sets so even though the first game had a 61 set and the second game had a 60 set we were never in danger of not winning either bet.

Day Session

Tsvetana Pironkova vs Serena Williams

The opening quarter final on Wednesday is a battle of the mums as Tsvetana Pironkova meets Serena Williams for the first time since 2015 for a place in the semi-final of the second Grand Slam of the rescheduled campaign.

Pironkova has been a revelation in this tournament. This is her first tournament for three years having become a parent and she has made the quarter final, beating the likes of Garbine Muguruza and Donna Vekic along the way. Serena has come through a tough draw nicely and is starting to look ominously good. She was involved in 50:50 battles with Sloane Stephens and Maria Sakkari in the last two rounds and got better the longer each match went on. I’m not expecting Serena to lose this but Pironkova has earned enough respect to not take her on.

Andrey Rublev vs Daniil Medvedev

The second part of the day session sees the two Russian players battling out for a spot in the last four when Andrey Rublev meets Daniil Medvedev in what should be a competitive and fiery encounter between two men who live on the edge on the tennis court.

Medvedev is the favourite for this match and given that not only has he not dropped a set in this tournament so far but he hasn’t even gone beyond 10 games in one. In truth though he has had a kind draw and goes up in class here and it will be interesting to see what happens when he is tested, as he should be here. I’m certainly hoping he feels the pinch because I’m on Rublev outright and if Medvedev is found wanting hopefully Rublev can take advantage. That is all the betting interest for me in this one as nothing in the match itself stands out.

Night Session

Victoria Azarenka vs Elise Mertens

Two women who have shone on the doubles courts in recent times meet for a place in the singles semi-final to open up the night session when the Cincinnati champion Victoria Azarenka takes on Elise Mertens for the right to face the winner from the day session game.

Azarenka looks in wonderful form in this tournament. I mentioned in my outright preview that Azarenka was my fancy for this until she won Cincinnati and her price dropped accordingly. As it turns out she now meets the woman I did back for the tournament in Mertens, who on the display she showed against Sofia Kenin in the previous round has to be considered a potential champion this week.

I’m hoping Mertens comes through but I’m expecting a tough battle here. I don’t see this being as one-sided as the two matches on Tuesday and would be surprised if we don’t get a third set here. Even if this is a straight sets match I’m expecting two very tight sets so I like the idea of there being more than 20.5 games before this one is won, hopefully by Mertens!

Alex de Minaur vs Dominic Thiem

The last of the quarter finals to be played out on the Arthur Ashe Stadium sees the current favourite for the men’s title in Dominic Thiem, taking on the Australian youngster who is looking for a place in a maiden semi-final at this level in Alex de Minaur.

These two have met twice in the past with Thiem winning 3-0 here three years ago and 3-1 in the Davis Cup in 2018 but the key thing to remember from that is that de Minaur is a much better player now than he was then. I still expect Thiem to win this match but I’m not convinced he wins it going away like he did against Felix Auger-Aliassime in the previous round. I think the Australian moves too well for that to happen so I like the idea of over 3.5 sets before this one is settled.
