The second day of action at the US Open on Tuesday sees the first round of both singles draws scheduled to come to a close, as long as the indifferent New York forecast isn’t too bad over the course of the day out in Queens.
We saw Novak Djokovic, Karolina Pliskova, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Petra Kvitova begin their quest to win the tournament successfully on Monday and on Tuesday it will be the turn of the likes of Serena Williams, Daniil Medvedev, Sofia Kenin and Andy Murray to lay down their credentials.
Day 1 Recap
It was a typical first day of the tournament albeit without the buzz and the excitement from the stands. We saw five set epics, clinical performances and absolutely no shortage of top quality tennis. Novak Djokovic, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Karolina Pliskova and Petra Kvitova all got their campaigns underway in straight sets while Alexander Zverev came through in four. There was the odd shock as Diego Schwartzman lost from a couple of sets up and Coco Gauff was also beaten.
It wasn’t a great day for us betting wise. Kevin Anderson probably deserved two sets off Zverev but could only take enough chances to win one so our +1.5 set handicap on him failed while Reilly Opelka failed to win an opening set he dominated and couldn’t maintain his control after getting his match back to 1-1. Our women’s bet was voided when Lesia Tsurenko withdrew so there is plenty of work to do for us.
Arthur Ashe Stadium
Once again there is only two matches on the day schedule inside the Arthur Ashe Stadium on Tuesday and it is the turn of a former champion to open up the play on the main court as Andy Murray returns to New York as a singles player having swerved the event last year. He takes on Yoshihito Nishioka in what has all the makings of a real physical battle. The great Serena Williams is second up on the court when she starts her quest for Grand Slam number 24 with a clash against fellow American player Kirstie Ahn.
The night session is loaded with talent as well and it gets going when Serena’s sister Venus Williams takes to the court she has had so much success on down the years. She will be tested to the full in this first round though when she takes on Karolina Muchova who ran Naomi Osaka close in the Cincinnati event last week. The last match of the day on Ashe sees the beaten finalist of last year taking to the court for the first time since then when Daniil Medvedev goes up against Federico Delbonis.
Louis Armstrong Stadium
There are plenty of Grand Slam champions and big names on show on the extended schedule inside the Louis Armstrong Stadium on Tuesday. Garbine Muguruza will be one such player who will be getting the action underway when she takes on Nao Hibino from Japan. The number two seed in the men’s draw is then up after them when Dominic Thiem meets Jaime Munar before the Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin begins her quest for successive Grand Slam titles when she takes on Yanina Wickmayer.
The former finalist of this tournament is up in the penultimate game on the Armstrong court as Madison Keys will look to put the disappointment of her first round defeat in the Cincinnati tournament last week behind her as she faces Timea Babos. It is over to the men to round off the play in this part of Flushing Meadows when Grigor Dimitrov takes on Tommy Paul in what should be an entertaining finale.
Court 17
The French Open semi-finalist of last season Amanda Anisimova is first up out on Court 17 when she takes on Viktoriya Tomova for a place in the second round. They are followed by the exciting Canadian player Felix Auger-Aliassime. He meets Thiago Monteiro from Brazil in what should be a competitive encounter before Milos Raonic begins his quest to go one better than he did in the Cincinnati event last week when he faces up to Leonardo Mayer. The 2017 winner Sloane Stephens gets her bid to win the title back up and running in the penultimate game on this court when she meets Mihaela Buzarnescu before the semi-finalist of last season Matteo Berrettini goes up against Go Soeda to finish off the play for the day.
Best of the Rest
Once again if you are following on Amazon Prime or the bookmaker streams throughout the day there are some big names dotted around the complex on Tuesday. For the second day in a row it is British day out on Court 5 with Jo Konta, Heather Watson and Dan Evans all in action. Elise Mertens and the Cincinnati champion Viktoria Azarenka are also on show on that court. There are some big names on Court 11 too where Andrey Rublev, Roberto Bautista Agut and Alex de Minaur get their campaigns underway before a certain Kim Clijsters makes her New York return under the lights. Maria Sakkari, Feliciano Lopez, Sam Querrey, Marin Cilic and Aryna Sabalenka are just some of the other household names in action around the grounds.

Men’s Betting
I like three bets in the men’s draw on Tuesday with the first coming right off the bat when Jannik Sinner takes on Karen Khachanov. These two aren’t strangers to each other because they met in an exhibition in Germany just after lockdown and Sinner won that match 2-0. He then went on to beat Roberto Bautista Agut too to further prove that he can play on a hard court after finishing last season strongly on them. Khachanov flatters to deceive on these kind of courts for my liking and while I wouldn’t be surprised if over the best of five sets the three matches the Russian got into his legs won’t see him come out on top here, I don’t think he’ll win easily and think the 3.5 game handicap on the Italian is worth riding. It is likely that at least one set that Khachanov wins will be on a tiebreak so if Sinner wins a set, and he could well win more than that, he should remain safely within the 3.5 games.
Jiri Vesely enjoyed these sorts of conditions when he served his way to the title down in Pune earlier in the year and at odds against he looks a good bet to see off a Corentin Moutet who would prefer conditions a little slower and bouncier. The Czech must have started licking his lips when he arrived at New York and saw the courts playing like this. He was pretty active through lockdown and won a lot of minor level matches and while they were against weaker opponents there is no substituting winning feelings. With that behind him and courts that should suit him I’ll take Vesely to come through this one.
The last bet I’ll have is for there to be more than 37.5 games in the later match between Grigor Dimitrov and Tommy Paul. These two met at the Australian Open earlier in the year and it ended in a tiebreak in the final set. There were 58 games in that match and while I don’t expect quite so many in this one, you’ve got to think that we’ll get four sets from these two relatively well matched men, and if we do then we should see at least 38 games. There were three tiebreaks in that match down under so you would think we are going to see tight sets between two fit men. The over looks very good to me here.
Women’s Betting
I’ll go with a couple of bets in the women’s draw on Tuesday as well with the first of those coming in the form of the resurgent Vera Zvonereva who can enjoy another decent start to a week. The Russian came back to prominence in the Cincinnati tournament last week when she ploughed her way through the draw and in the early stages of her last 16 clash with Jo Konta she was certainly taking the match to the Brit. The veteran now faces someone half her age here in Leylah Fernandez, the Canadian who is beginning to make some strides in the game and who herself qualified for Cincinnati last week before losing to Ons Jabeur in the first round. This is a big deal for Fernandez though and while her time will come, if Zvonereva performs like she did last week I think she comes through this one.
Donna Vekic was a seed that I was wanting to take on here. She didn’t really land a blow on Viktoria Azarenka in the Cincinnati tournament last week and while few did it was the tame manner of her loss which surprised me. I usually have Vekic down as a fighter but there wasn’t much in her on that occasion. She was one of few players who didn’t play much during lockdown unlike her opponent here Kristyna Pliskova, the sister of the number one seed Karolina. Pliskova was playing against some handy opponents in the exhibitions and tournaments out in the Czech Republic and that part of the world during lockdown and while she wasn’t always successful, her game will surely have improved for the experience of playing the likes of Muchova and the other Czech girls. Pliskova beat Maria Sakkari in Palermo and Petra Martic in Prague and can add Vekic to the list here.
