The Champion of Champions tournament continues on Tuesday when Group 4 of the event is played out and with the four men on show at the Ricoh Arena absolute top quality is almost guaranteed in what many are calling the ‘Group of Death’
Ronnie O’Sullivan and John Higgins headline the action on Tuesday and if they can win their opening matches they would set up a wonderful looking group final but Stuart Bingham and Ryan Day will not be heading to Coventry to make up the numbers so we are in for a truly excellent day of action.
Ronnie O’Sullivan vs Stuart Bingham
We begin the day with the Essex derby as the Shanghai Masters champion Ronnie O’Sullivan takes on the winner of the English Open last month in Stuart Bingham in what could be a really juicy tussle.
In that Shanghai Masters success it was Bingham who was beaten by O’Sullivan in the quarter finals. That was one of a few beatings that O’Sullivan has given to Bingham but the former world champion does have wins of his own against the Rocket. If this was over a longer distance I might have chanced some of the side markets but the edge isn’t really with me over the best of seven so I’ll leave this alone.
John Higgins vs Ryan Day
The second group semi-final on Tuesday sees the former champion John Higgins looking to make it through to the group final when he takes on a Ryan Day who will be looking to take down a high profile tournament such as this one this week.
Day has a decent enough recent record over Higgins. He has won their last two meetings and away from the Championship League which I’m never sure who fancied it and who doesn’t, he has four wins in the last six battles between these two. Day has been having tip issues in recent times but if he is over those he should lay down a real challenge here.
Higgins has mentioned how his motivation for the game is quite low recently and that has to be an issue here. He should actually get himself up for this one easily enough just by the profile of the event and the potential group final he could be in but recent history suggests even if the Scot is up for this he is still beatable. If Day has sorted his tip problems out he has been back from China long enough to win this one.

Group Betting
It is always hard to bet on a group which involves Ronnie O’Sullivan. Given that he has never not won his group in this competition there is certainly a case that the 6/5 on him to win this is a good price but he’s going to have to beat two very good opponents so the price is probably right rather than anything special.
If Higgins was at his best and made it to the final he could easily take this group down but he’s no value at 5/2 given he genuinely might not get past Day in the semi-final. Both Day and Bingham are big prices but again it all looks about right for the challenge they face. I’ll leave it alone.
