2020 PDC Home Tour – Group 3 Sunday 19th April Tips and Betting Preview

The PDC Home Tour continues on Sunday evening when the third group takes place as four more men look to make it through to the next stage when they battle it out in their homes for our viewing pleasure in these lockdown times.

We’ve already seen two of the best in the world inside their man caves battling it out and we get to see another star of the PDC circuit in action on Sunday, when Dave Chisnall graces the tournament with his presence.

The Format

Each night four players will battle it out in a round robin format with the group winner progressing to the next stage of the tournament. All six matches in each group will be the best of nine legs with two points awarded for a win. If players finish level on points then leg difference will decide the outcome. If that cannot separate players then the head to head will settle the group winner. Were three players to be tied on points and leg difference the player with the highest overall average goes through. The entire tournament is being streamed live on PDC.tv.

Saturday Recap

For the second night is succession a heavily fancied odds on shot went west as Gerwyn Price followed Peter Wright in failing to get out of his group. Price could only beat Rowby-John Rodriguez and Ted Evetts but it was Luke Woodhouse who stole the show with three wins from his three matches to win the group and he also landed the first nine dart finish on the Home Tour as well. Ted Evetts ended third and Rodriguez pulled up the rear.

Unfortunately the match Evetts did manage to win wasn’t the one we wanted him to win as he beat Rodriguez rather than Woodhouse so we’re still searching for a first win of the event but with 30 groups and a knockout phase to come there is plenty of time to find that and get ourselves back into profit for the event.

Group 3 Line Up

Dave Chisnall is the headline attraction in this third group of the competition. He has dropped outside the world’s top 10 now but there are a lot of people who think this format and setup could be right up his street. We know when he gets going that he is a relentless scorer but if there is a weakness it is in the pressure doubles. They are unlikely to exist as much in his own living room though so it is easy to see why Chizzy has been installed as a 11/10 favourite.

Chisnall might not have it all his own way though because one of his group rivals is a man who unlike Chizzy himself has actually won a PDC major even though this is his first year on the PDC circuit. That player is Scott Waites who won the Grand Slam of Darts some 10 years ago and who has twice won the BDO World Championship since then. You can get 10/3 on Waites winning this group. He might be more at home so to speak playing at home but that is more a hunch than meaningful knowledge.

Jan Dekker is the third man who is on show on Sunday evening. The Dutch ace, weirdly nicknamed ‘Mister Coat’ hasn’t really done much in the PDC but the fact he has a Tour card shouldn’t be underestimated. His biggest successes were a couple of semi-final appearances at Lakeside but throughout his career scoring has been an issue. I can’t stress enough my dislike for weak scorers in these home gigs. Those who don’t mind it though can get 5/1 on Dekker to win.

The fourth man taking part in this group is the lesser known player of the quartet in the form of Jonathan Worsley who won an event on the Challenge Tour in 2018 and got his Tour card last year on countback. He hasn’t been past the last 32 of an event since he got his card which highlights his limitations. You need to be a decent standard to have a card and win on that Challenge Tour but on paper at least he really does look to be the weakest of the four.

Outright Betting

Backing short prices in this tournament hasn’t been a profitable strategy so far but I do think Dave Chisnall is the man to be on here. Waites is his biggest challenger but is renowned for doing little practice and I’m not convinced he will have been doing much in lockdown. Chisnall has the darts in his encounter with Waites too which could be very significant. I would be surprised if either of the other two get involved here.

I probably wouldn’t be queuing up to get involved in Chisnall winning this at odds on because he does have to hit his doubles crisply but it would take something pretty extraordinary for the other two aside from Waites to beat him. That means in my eyes the 11/10 on offer is basically 11/10 on Chisnall to beat Waites in the opening match and that is decent enough value to me.

Match Betting

I am going to side with Dave Chisnall in the match betting front as well and in particular his match against Jan Dekker where I think the 6/4 on him in a multi-market is basically 6/4 on one particular leg. That is of course the win, most 180s and highest checkout market, one which I can see Chisnall coming through. I certainly think he’ll win the match and I definitely think he’ll hit the most 180s so it is 6/4 he hits the highest checkout to me.

Dekker is a good finisher to be fair to him but he’s a bang ordinary scorer and his record against Chisnall as a result is poor. Of their 10 meetings Dekker has only won two of them. Chisnall has won five of their last six battles and in those five matches Chizzy has won, Dekker has won a grand total of seven legs so there is half a chance the Dutchman won’t be going at many checkouts here let alone hitting the highest one. 6/4 on the match treble looks a touch too big to me.
