Super League XXV – Saturday 29th August Matches Tips and Betting Preview

The Super League is back from the week off for the Challenge Cup and it comes back with a double header to start the busy weekend as two matches take place on Saturday, with the season moving to the Halliwell Jones Stadium for this round of games.

As has been the case since the restart, both the matches are live on Sky Sports so there is no need to miss any of the action and with four of the better sides over the last couple of seasons in action we should be treated to some decent action.

The Format

There has been a change in the format of the season. The ‘loop matches’ and Magic Weekend have bitten the dust so teams will play 20 regular season matches ahead of the playoffs. Scrums are a thing of the past for the remainder of the season. They are being replaced with a tap restart to prevent the spread of the virus. The ‘six to go’ rule that is being used in NRL is also coming into the Super League with more eyes likely to be on the game with other sports yet to get back up and running.

Wigan Warriors vs Castleford Tigers (16.15)

The opening match of the two on Saturday sees the Wigan Warriors taking on the Castleford Tigers in a match which should see plenty of attacking rugby and free flowing action taking place with some of the better ball players in the league on show here.

Castleford might not be quite as good to watch as they were 2-3 seasons ago but they are far from the worst. Wigan are very entertaining these days with the likes of Bevan French and Jackson Hastings among the best in the league in their respective positions. Ordinarily I would be looking to take the points in this match but Castleford being nilled last time out is a bit of a concern. I would fancy Wigan to come out on top but I don’t have a massive feeling on whether they will cover the handicap or not so I’ll just sit back and watch this one rather than get too involved in it.

Leeds Rhinos vs Salford Red Devils (18.30)

The second match of the day is a big one for the Leeds Rhinos when they go up against the team who made it all the way to the Grand Finals last term in Salford Red Devils, in a pretty even match as far as the bookmakers are concerned.

Leeds Rhinos need a win here. They simply haven’t got going again after the restart. Yes they won their first game back but they were second best in that for all but the last 15 minutes and then they’ve suffered two tame defeats so the Challenge Cup break came at a good time for them. Salford just can’t seem to get their season going. First it stopped for lockdown then when it resumed they played one match then had to isolate because Hull FC had a bunch of positive Covid tests. I would imagine the Red Devils players will be chomping at the bit to get going here.

It is a small sample size admittedly, but there is no doubt in my mind that Salford Red Devils have put in the best performance that we’ve seen of the two since lockdown. There is probably a little less pressure on them in this match but they have plenty of quality whereas Leeds are missing one or two especially in the forwards which I’d prefer them to have. In a pretty even match the 5/4 on Salford looks a fair play to me.
