The Big Bash League season begins on Sunday but before it does there is just enough time to have a look at the side markets for the campaign where this year we have plenty priced up with some good value to be had.
We have things like team top batter and bowler markets as well as sixes markets for the tournament, table betting and so much more and having sifted through the various offerings we have picked out four bets that we like.
Finish Bottom
One of those markets is the one which involves the table and who will finish bottom of it. Both of the Melbourne sides are the favourites in this market but I actually think the Melbourne Renegades will be fine this time around. I do worry a little more for the Melbourne Stars but 7/2 isn’t really offering us up much in the way of value so I’m prepared to look away from the Victoria area and had off the mainland over to Tasmania and take the Hobart Hurricanes.
Hobart have been steadily getting weaker in this competition and have missed out on the playoffs in three of the last four seasons and a couple of their overseas players are heading off to the ILT20 halfway through this campaign. Since D’Arcy Short lost his powers at the top of the order and departed the Hurricanes have struggled. I’m not a huge fan of bowlers captaining sides in this format and there looks a lack of depth in the Hobart ranks. I think they are value to finish bottom.

Top Team Batter
All of the teams have a top batter market priced up and there are bits of value around in them although in a couple of cases I’m on those players to top score in the tournament so I don’t really want to invest too much more into those but there is one I am yet to get on which I am happy to do so in the team market. That comes in the Melbourne Stars market where Hilton Cartwright looks a big price to do some damage to me.
Immediately we are getting value in this market because Glenn Maxwell makes up a lot of the book and he is missing at least the opening game. Cartwright is having a decent season. He already has 150 to his name in the Sheffield Shield this term as well as some other decent knocks in both that and the Marsh One-Day Cup. He was the third highest scorer for the Stars last season but with Maxwell an early fitness doubt and Beau Webster on the Australia radar there is the potential for Cartwright to go well here.
Top Team Bowler
Two bowlers for their teams also catch my eye this season. Wes Agar has moved to the Sydney Thunder and I think he is fair value to be the top bowler for his side. The Thunder have reliable bowlers in Chris Green, Tanveer Sangha and Daniel Sams so someone will have to go and teams might get after Agar and give him some cheap wickets. I would expect Agar to bowl in the powerplay and the power surge overs when the cheap wickets come along and he could easily be the value to the bigger names.
Chris Jordan is one I like for the Hobart Hurricanes. Riley Meredith and Nathan Ellis are the favourites in this market but the former can never be trusted when it comes to his fitness while the latter is the captain and that is a weird dynamic. Jordan will bowl in the power surge and at the end of the innings so he is going to pick up a lot of cheap wickets in the tournament. He is here for the duration too which is no bad thing and in a competitive market but one where there are holes in the market leaders, Jordan stands out.
