We have another double header of action in the Caribbean Premier League on Sunday with the opening match of the two coming from Sabina Park where even this early in the competition you get the feeling it is ‘last chance saloon’ for the Jamaica Tallawahs.
The Barbados Tridents might only be two points ahead of the Tallawahs going into the match but they have played a couple of games less so defeat for Jamaica here might leave them stranded at the bottom of the table.
Jamaica Tallawahs
It remains to be seen what the Jamaica Tallawahs can do to turn their fortunes around. They should know what they need to do, they need to find a way to contain teams when they are in the field but knowing that and solving that seem to be two different things because if anything they are getting worse in that discipline which I thought was actually impossible, but they proved to me that it wasn’t.
If the Tallawahs do solve their bowling woes, and I’m not entirely sure Jade Dernbach is the answer to them, then they are at least in good touch with the bat. The big problem Jamaica are going to have going forward now is that they have a terrible net run rate so they are going to have to win two more matches than two sides from here on in and you get the feeling that they are going to struggle to do that.
Barbados Tridents
It has been a quiet start to the campaign for the Barbados Tridents. They have only played two matches so their end to the regular season is going to come thick and fast so if they can pick up some form and confidence in their road matches then you would think they are entitled to be deep in the mix when the business end of the competition comes along. A win here would give them two wins from three away games which is good form indeed.
Had it not been for an insane five over blitz from two powerful batsmen in Guyana, the Tridents could even already have two wins to their name. They bounced back from that bruising few overs with a fine win last time out but that seems like a long time ago so they will have needed to ensure they stay hot despite not being able to get into a rhythm of regular matches so far. Barbados look to have the tools to go very well.
Team News
The consensus seemed to be that the injury suffered by Andre Russell two matches ago was not as bad as it was originally thought but whether he is fit to play here remains to be seen. Jade Dernbach has arrived in Jamaica to begin overseas duties.
Barbados Tridents could be unchanged after winning their previous match. There was criticism about the tempo of Leniko Boucher but in the end he delivered a decent effort so there is no need for them to switch too much.
Betting
In two matches on this ground we’ve seen 19 and 35 sixes so I’m very much surprised that we are seeing lines of 17.5 for that discipline in this match. I wouldn’t want to call who will win it because it is a small ground so whoever chases should have a big advantage as we saw in that opening match here. With that in mind I’m going to head towards the sixes.
We saw in that blitz that the Guyana pair unleashed that this Tridents attack can go round the back but when you look down their batting they have a number of big hitters in their ranks so they should contribute nicely to the big hitting extravaganza here. The wickets at Sabina Park have looked excellent for batting and the ground is small so I’m expecting to see more than 17.5 sixes here.
